"Where, Venerable Sir, is the great celestial abode named Varasiṭṭha of King Yama, the Lokapāla of Śakra, king of the gods, lord of the gods, stated to be?"
"Gautama! To the south of the great celestial abode Saudharmāvataṃsaka, in the Saudharma kalpa, having crossed incalculable thousands of yojanas, there is stated to be the great celestial abode named Varasiṭṭha of King Yama, the Lokapāla of Śakra, king of the gods, lord of the gods—twelve and a half hundred thousand yojanas [in extent]—as [described for] the celestial abode of Soma, so up to the consecration. The capital is likewise [described], up to the rows of palaces.
Under the command, direction, word, and instruction of King Yama, the Lokapāla of Śakra, king of the gods, lord of the gods, dwell these gods, namely: those belonging to the Yamakāyika body, or those belonging to the Yamadevakāyika body, or those belonging to the Pretakāyika body, or those belonging to the Pretadevakāyika body, Asurakumāras, Asurakumārīs, Kandarapas, hell-guards, subservient gods—and whatever other ones of such nature, all of them devoted to him, belonging to his party, dependent on him, dwell under the command, direction, word, and instruction of King Yama, the Lokapāla of Śakra, king of the gods, lord of the gods.
In Jambūdvīpa island, to the south of Mount Mandara, whatever these [disturbances] arise, namely: minor insurrections, or great riots, or quarrels, or uproars, or hostilities, or great wars, or great battles, or great falls of weapons, or falls of great men, or great falls of blood, or pestilences, or family sicknesses, or village sicknesses, or district sicknesses, or city sicknesses, or head pain, or eye pain, or ear pain, or nail pain, or tooth pain, or seizure by Indra, or seizure by Skanda, or seizure by Kumāra, or seizure by Yakṣas, or seizure by Bhūtas, or quotidian fevers, or tertian fevers, or quartan fevers, or four-day fevers, or anxieties, or cough, or asthma, or consumption, or fever, or burning sensations, or scabies-lesions, or indigestion, or jaundice, or piles, or fistula, or heart-pain, or headache, or pain in the womb, or flank-pain, or belly-pain, or village plagues, or city plagues, or town plagues, or market-town plagues, or port plagues, or isolated hamlet plagues, or harbour-town plagues, or hermitage plagues, or settlement plagues, or campsite plagues, destruction of life, destruction of people, destruction of wealth, destruction of families, calamitous afflictions, and whatever other ones of such nature, none of these are unknown, unseen, unheard, unthought, or unperceived by King Yama, the Lokapāla of Śakra, king of the gods, lord of the gods, or by those Yamakāyika gods.
To King Yama, the Lokapāla of Śakra, king of the gods, lord of the gods, these gods were recognized as dear as sons, namely:
