In Rājagṛha, up to he said as follows:
"Venerable Sir, the Ājīvikas spoke thus to the venerable Elders: 'Venerable Sir, if someone steals an article of a lay follower who has performed sāmāyika and is staying in the śramaṇa retreat, Venerable Sir, when searching for that article, does he search for his own article, or does he search for another's article?'"
"Gautama, he searches for his own article, not for another's article."
"Venerable Sir, by virtue of those moralities, vows, virtuous qualities, abstentions, renunciations, and pauṣadha fasts, does that article of his become non-article [not his property]?"
"Yes, it does."
"Then for what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said: 'He searches for his own article, not for another's article'?"
"Gautama, he thinks thus: 'Silver is not mine, gold is not mine, bell-metal is not mine, garment is not mine, the existing substantial wealth beginning with extensive money, gold, jewels, gems, pearls, conches, stones, corals, and rubies is not mine'; but his attitude of possessiveness has not been abandoned. For that reason, Gautama, it is said: 'He searches for his own article, not for another's article.'"
"Venerable Sir, if someone commits adultery with the wife of a lay follower who has performed sāmāyika and is staying in the śramaṇa retreat, Venerable Sir, does he commit adultery with [his] wife, or with a non-wife?"
"Gautama, he commits adultery with [his] wife, not with a non-wife."
