In Rājagṛha up to [Gautama] spoke thus: “Venerable Sir, from where did the king-elephant Udāyin depart immediately prior to being reborn as the king-elephant Udāyin?”
“Gautama! Having departed immediately prior from among the Asurakumāra deities, he was reborn as the king-elephant Udāyin.”
“Venerable Sir, when his time comes, having died, where will the king-elephant Udāyin go? Where will he be reborn?”
“Gautama! In this Ratnaprabhā earth, in a hell-abode having a maximum lifespan duration of one sāgaropama, he will be reborn as an inhabitant of hell.”
“Venerable Sir, having departed immediately prior from there, where will he go? Where will he be reborn?”
“Gautama! In the realm of Mahāvideha he will attain liberation up to make an end of all suffering.”
“Venerable Sir, from where did the king-elephant Bhūtānanda depart immediately prior to being reborn as the king-elephant Bhūtānanda?” It is just like Udāyin up to he will make an end [of all suffering].
