28.1.992

"Venerable Sir, where did jīvas amass evil karma? Where did they commit it?"
"Gautama, 1. They could all have been in animal forms. 2. Or they could have been in animal forms and among inhabitants of hell. 3. Or they could have been in animal forms and among humans. 4. Or they could have been in animal forms and among deities. 5. Or they could have been in animal forms, among inhabitants of hell, and among humans. 6. Or they could have been in animal forms, among inhabitants of hell, and among deities. 7. Or they could have been in animal forms, among humans, and among deities. 8. Or they could have been in animal forms, among inhabitants of hell, among humans, and among deities.
"Venerable Sir, where did jīvas with lesyā amass evil karma? Where did they commit it?" Just so. Thus for those with black lesyā up to those without lesyā; those of the dark half up to those of the bright half; thus up to those endowed with formless cognitive application.
"Venerable Sir, where did inhabitants of hell amass evil karma? Where did they commit it?"
"Gautama, they could all have been in animal forms—just so the eight alternatives must be spoken. Thus everywhere eight alternatives up to those endowed with formless cognitive application. Thus up to the Vaimānikas. Thus also a standard set for knowledge-obscuring [karma]; thus up to obstructive [karma]. Thus these constitute nine standard sets beginning with jīvas and ending with the Vaimānikas."
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"—and so on, until he wanders [on].

28.1.993

“Venerable Sir! Where did immediately reborn inhabitants of hell accumulate evil karma? Where did they perform it?”
“Gautama! All of them might have been in the animal-born [state]; thus here too there are eight alternatives. In this manner, for immediately reborn [beings], from inhabitants of hell onwards, whatever [attribute] belongs to whichever—beginning with lesyā up to formless application—all that should be stated according to this distribution up to the Vaimānikas; with the exception that those which are to be excluded among the immediately reborn should be excluded here as in the Śataka on Binding. In this manner, there is a series of twenty-four places with knowledge-obscuring [karma] as well. Thus completely up to obstructive [karma]. This uddeśaka also should be spoken as comprehending the nine series of twenty-four places. “Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!”—[he said].

28.1.994

In this manner, following this sequence, just as the order of uddeśakas is in the Śataka on Binding, exactly so it should be understood here too in the eight alternatives, with the exception that what belongs to each should be stated for that one, up to the penultimate uddeśaka. All these together make eleven uddeśakas.
“Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!”—[Gautama] up to went about.
