3.1.161

At that time and in that period, the royal capital Balicañcā was without an Indra and without a priest.
Then many Asurakumāra gods and goddesses residing in the royal capital Balicañcā perceived the foolish ascetic Tāmali with [their] clairvoyant knowledge. Having perceived [him], they called to one another and spoke thus:
"Indeed, beloved of the gods! The royal capital Balicañcā is without an Indra and without a priest, and we, beloved of the gods, are dependent on an Indra, governed by an Indra, and have our tasks subordinate to an Indra. Moreover, beloved of the gods, this foolish ascetic Tāmali, outside the city of Tāmalittī in the northeastern quarter, having drawn a bounded circle of restriction, emaciated by the mortification of sallekhanā, having renounced food and water, has laid down to die by fasting like a felled tree. Therefore, beloved of the gods, it is indeed best for us to cause the foolish ascetic Tāmali to make a resolve of status for the royal capital Balicañcā."
Having said this, they agreed among one another upon this matter. Having agreed, they went out through the midst of the royal capital Balicañcā. Having gone out, they approached the Ruyagida Uppāta mountain. Having approached, they underwent the transformational manifestation. Having transformed, [they proceeded] up to creating ulterior transformed forms. Having created [them], by that superior, quick, swift, violent, victorious, adept, lion-like, rapid, aloft, divine celestial motion, traversing through the midst of countless continents and oceans diagonally, they went to Jambūdvīpa, to the Bharata region, to the city of Tāmalittī, where Tāmali Moriyaputta was. Having approached, standing directly opposite above the foolish ascetic Tāmali, they displayed [their] divine celestial power, divine celestial splendour, divine celestial majesty, and the thirty-two-fold divine dance performance. Having displayed [this], they circumambulated the foolish ascetic Tāmali three times from left to right. Having done so, they paid homage and bowed down. Having paid homage and bowed down, they spoke thus:
"Indeed, beloved of the gods! We, many Asurakumāra gods and goddesses residing in the royal capital Balicañcā, pay homage, bow down, honour, respect, and wait upon the beloved of the gods as auspicious, fortunate, a deity, and an object of veneration. Beloved of the gods, our royal capital Balicañcā is without an Indra and without a priest, and we, beloved of the gods, are dependent on an Indra, governed by an Indra, and have our tasks subordinate to an Indra. Therefore, beloved of the gods, take regard of the royal capital Balicañcā, acknowledge [it], remember [it], bind an intent [for it], make a resolution, make a resolve of status! Then, when your time has come, passing away, you will be reborn in the royal capital Balicañcā. Then you will become our Indra. Then, together with us, you will dwell enjoying divine pleasures."
Then, when spoken to thus by those many Asurakumāra gods and goddesses residing in the royal capital Balicañcā, that foolish ascetic Tāmali did not regard this matter, did not acknowledge [it], [and] remained silent.
Then those many Asurakumāra gods and goddesses residing in the royal capital Balicañcā circumambulated Tāmali Moriyaputta a second time and a third time from left to right, [saying] up to: "And our royal capital Balicañcā, beloved of the gods, is without an Indra and without a priest, and we, beloved of the gods, are dependent on an Indra, governed by an Indra, and have our tasks subordinate to an Indra. Therefore, beloved of the gods, take regard of the royal capital Balicañcā, acknowledge [it], remember [it], bind an intent [for it], make a resolution, make a resolve of status!" up to, when spoken to thus a second time and a third time, he did not regard this matter, did not acknowledge [it], [and] remained silent.
Then those many Asurakumāra gods and goddesses residing in the royal capital Balicañcā, being disregarded and unacknowledged by the foolish ascetic Tāmali, departed in the very direction from which they had appeared.
