“Gautama, he kills a man, and he also kills non-men.”
“For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said: ‘He kills a man, and he also kills non-men’?”
“Gautama, it occurs to him thus: ‘Indeed, I am killing one man.’ But while killing that one man, he kills manifold jīvas. For that reason, Gautama, it is said: ‘He kills a man, and he also kills non-men.’”
“Venerable Sir, does a man, while killing a horse, kill a horse, or does he kill a non-horse?”
“Gautama, he kills a horse, and he also kills non-horses.”
“For what reason?”
“The reason is the same. So too for an elephant, a lion, a tiger, up to a leopard.”
“Venerable Sir, does a man, while killing a sage, kill a sage, or does he kill a non-sage?”
“Gautama, he kills a sage, and he also kills non-sages.”
“For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said: ‘He kills a sage, and he also kills non-sages’?”
“Gautama, it occurs to him thus: ‘Indeed, I am killing one sage.’ But while killing that one sage, he kills infinite jīvas. For that reason, Gautama, it is said: ‘He kills a sage, and he also kills non-sages.’”
“Venerable Sir, is a man, while killing a man, touched by enmity toward the man, or touched by enmity toward non-men?”
“Gautama, necessarily, he is touched either by enmity toward the man; or he is touched by enmity toward the man and enmity toward a non-man; or he is touched by enmity toward the man and enmity toward non-men. So too for a horse, up to a leopard, up to: or he is touched by enmity toward the leopard and enmity toward non-leopards.”
“Venerable Sir, is a man, while killing a sage, touched by enmity toward the sage, or touched by enmity toward non-sages?”
“Gautama, necessarily, he is touched by enmity toward the sage and enmity toward non-sages.”
