For what reason, venerable sir, is it said: ‘Bharata realm? Bharata realm?’
O Gautama! In the Bharata realm, to the south of the Vaitāḍhya mountain at an uninterrupted distance of one hundred and fourteen yojanas and eleven nineteenths of a yojana, to the north of the Lavaṇasamudra ocean at an uninterrupted distance of one hundred and fourteen yojanas and eleven nineteenths of a yojana, to the west of the great Gaṅgā river, to the east of the great Sindhu river, right in the center of the middle third of the southern half of Bharata, there is a capital city named Vinītā. It is long from east to west and wide from north to south, twelve yojanas in length and nine yojanas in width, designed by the intellect of Dhanapati, with golden ramparts, lovely and adorned with coping-stones of five colors made of various jewels, resembling Alakāpurī, joyous and festive, a manifest divine realm, affluent, tranquil, prosperous, with delighted citizens and country folk, up to charming.
