yā gāvaḥ khalu devatā vrajasadām asmākam uccaistarāṃ
ye bālāś ca sadaiva jīva-tulitās te' mī vipannāḥ puraḥ |
hā hanta svayam asmi tat-sahacaraḥ kiṃ bhrātaraṃ mātaraṃ
tātaṃ sarva-janaṃ ca vacmi mama dhik cāpalyataḥ sāhasam || [śārdūlavikrīḍitam]

"The cows that are the supreme deities of us who dwell in Vraja, / and these boys who are forever equal to our very life—they lie dead before me! / Alas, alas! I myself was their companion! What shall I say to my brother, my mother, / my father, and everyone? Shame on my reckless daring born of fickle folly!"
