pūrṇāṃ dṛṣṭiṃ vidhi-vaśatayā kācid āñcīn murārer
ardhaṃ kācid vraja-jana-gatā kācid asyās tribhāgam |
kācit kiñcin na ca tad akhilaṃ tulyatām eva dadhre
sarvāsāṃ yan manasi caklpe hanta tāpāya tadvat || [mandākrāntā]

One maiden obtained Murāri's full glance by force of destiny; / one obtained half, falling upon the people of Vraja; one obtained a third of it; / one obtained none at all—and yet none of that maintained any equality, / for, alas, in the mind of all of them it caused equal anguish.
