[46] Now let the events of Vraja be pursued. Just as was arranged in the previous counsel of the demons, the female bird-demon [Pūtanā]—slaying infants of up to ten days old from country to country like a falcon slaying herons, obedient to Kaṃsa, the daughter of Virocana's son [Bali]—came in this night near the region of Vraja. She indeed was one who bore a terrifying form: her head was bare with unkempt masses of matted hair; her frightful mouth was covered with enormous fangs that had bitten millions of infants; the patience of the inhabitants of the universe was shattered by the fearsome serpents of the hairs on the path situated within her eye-sockets; the steadfastness of living beings was restrained as the surrounding regions were scorched by the irresistible power of the fierce flames of poison under the guise of milk emitted from the pair of breasts hanging from her chest between her two wings; in short, she whose limbs were an adversary to every living being was making children into crushed rice flakes, as it were.
