janmanā jāyate śūdraḥ saṃskārairdvija ucyate /
vedapāṭhādbhavedvipro brāhmaṇo brahmavidyayā //
By birth one is born a Śūdra; by life-cycle rites one is called twice-born; / by reciting the Veda one becomes a vipra, and a Brahmin through knowledge of Brahman.
