What words of love would those be if, tormented by separation and deprived of enjoyment, they were untrue?
Upon seeing those things, that mountain of supreme joy will become a multitude of heaps.
With these words, bring comfort to my companion who is tormented by our first separation!
Return from the mountain of Kailāsa, which is white as the bull of the Three-Eyed One;
Bring back from her an auspicious token of your own, and describe each and every detail to me.
Urged on by the swift-moving winds carrying the filaments of kunda flowers, you should come swiftly.
O good friend, having stayed a little while with my kinsfolk,
I believe that a steadfast message will surely come to me again from you.
I think the cātakas request water from you even without a sound,
For to those who are cherished, the fulfillment of the requested deed is itself the reply!
O cloud, having done all these things—which are the desired pleasures of my own yearning mind—
Either out of friendship for this tormented petitioner or with a mind of great compassion,
May you too reach the land of your desire, endowed with the glory of bearing an assembly of beautiful rainclouds,
And may you never be parted from Vidyut; likewise may all be auspicious and well!"
The Cloud Messenger composed by the great poet Kālidāsa is complete.
By order of the Great Officer Nam mkha' brtan pa, adorned with immeasurable supreme virtues such as intelligence, compassion, discipline, gentle courtesy, and generosity,
This was translated, revised, and finalized at the great monastic college of glorious Sa skya by the Kashmiri paṇḍita and great poet Sumanaśrī, the great reviser and translator, the polymath monk Byang chub rtse mo, and the translator and exponent of scripture and reasoning, Nam mkha' bzang po.
By whatever merit was generated by our exertion,
And by the pure intention that prompted this work and provided the conducive conditions,
May we cross over saṃsāra and attain the three kāyas!
From the noble words of the Ruler of the North,
This poem was translated into the Tibetan language
Together with the great Kashmiri paṇḍita
By the monk Byang chub rtse mo.
Having benefited immeasurable living beings by this, may there be auspiciousness, prosperity, and happiness!
