1.7.22

samudita-madane ramaṇī-vadane cumbana-valitādhare |
mṛga-mada-tilakaṃ likhati sapulakaṃ mṛgam iva rajanī-kare ||

When Madana has arisen on the lovely woman's face, her lips turned for a kiss, / thrilling with joy, he paints a musk forehead mark, like the hare on the moon.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

In vain, in vain!
Earth will of earth! I mourn more than I blame;
If he had known, he would not sit and paint
The tilka on her smooth black brow, nor claim
Quick kisses from her yielded lips--false, faint--
False, fragrant, fatal! Krishna's quest is o'er
By Jumna's shore!

Edwin Arnold 1875, The Indian Song of Songs
