Muttering thus, the foe Mahiṣa was slain by whom, may that Pārvatī protect you. "Thus"—how? "O Fire [śikhin], are you the only one quenched, extinguished, at the vanguard of battle, while the wielder of the bow Śārṅga, Viṣṇu, too, though shooting, releasing arrows, has become arrowless [nir-bāṇa]?"—by pun, there is non-difference between *va* and *ba*. "O Lord of Waters, Varuṇa, where has that courage of yours gone, where has it departed? Cast off, abandon your misery, since you are no wretch [dīna], and also you are the lord of rivers [na-dīna = nadī-ina]. O Indra [sunāsīra] displaying fear, indicator of fear, the dust of your vanguard, the dust rising from the front of your army, is not able to break the enemy; curse you, where are you going? The idea is: formerly the enemies used to flee merely upon seeing the dust rising from the front of your army, but not so now; wherever you go, right there you will be slain."
"Nandin, your blow, soft as a mṛdaṅga in combat, brings me joy!
Why, Elephant-Faced One, when a single tusk-hair is broken, do you depart as if utterly tamed?
Slaughtering, slaughtering the gods here right now, I alone am Mahākāla, none other!"—
crushing the Daitya while he thus insulted the Pramathas, may the Mountain's Daughter protect you! (35)
