Courtesan—Ah, a side-door indicated by the turn in the wall! Because it has fallen into disuse, there is much darkness here. So I shall just stay here. (She stands.)
Hero—Maitreya! Go and present the domestic offering to the Mothers at the crossroads.
Jester—I have no desire; let someone else go.
Hero—Why?
Jester—My mind, like a reflection in a mirror-disc, turns right at the left and left at the right.
Hero—Fool! Worship according to our means. Deities are pleased with devotion. So go.
Jester—How shall I go alone?
Hero—Radanikā! Accompany his honour.
Radanikā—As master commands.
Jester—My lady! I shall carry the lamp.
Hero—Let it be as you think best.
Jester—(Taking the lamp) Hey, Radanikā! Open the side-door.
Radanikā—So be it. (She mimes opening the door.)
(The courtesan puts out the lamp with the hem of her garment.)
Jester—Alas, alas!
Jester—Alas, alas!
Hero—Friend! What is this?
Jester—As I was going out suddenly, by the wind packed together rushing through the open side-door and mingled from the highway, the lamp was put out in my hand.
Hero—Fool! Shame on you.
Jester—Small indeed was my fault! Radanikā! Go and wait for me at the crossroads, while I fetch a lamp from the inner courtyard and return. (He exits.)
Maidservant—Noble sir! So be it. (She walks around.)
Courtesan—Luckily, the side-door has been opened for my entry. Away with fear for my conduct! Let me enter. (She enters the interior and stands there.)
Viṭa—(Looking, to himself) Coming out of the house, someone is approaching this way. Well then, I will play a trick on this poor soul with her. (Aloud) A fragrance as though infused with fragrant bath-incense!
Śakāra—Yes, master! I hear the scent with my ears. With my nostrils stuffed with darkness, I cannot see well.
Viṭa—Stop, stop! Where will you go? (He catches the maidservant.)
(The maidservant falls to the ground in terror.)
Śakāra—Catch her, master! Catch her!
Viṭa—
Here she is, who through the arrogance of youth disdained a high-born youth;
assailed by the hair, where flowers are placed, which ought to be cherished. 22
