3.18

vidūṣakaḥ---tattahodo hiaeṇa tumaṃ yācedi. ahaṃ sīseṇa yācemi . gaṇha edaṃ. [tatrabhavatī hṛdayena tvā yācate. ahaṃ śīrṣeṇa yāce. gṛhāṇaitat.]
nāyakaḥ---tathā. (gṛhītvā) vayasya! imāṃ muktāvalīṃ gṛhītvā vasantasenāyāḥ sakāśaṃ gaccha.
artheṣu kāmamupalabhya manoratho me
strīṇāṃ dhaneṣvanucitaṃ praṇayaṃ karoti.
māne ca kāryakaraṇe ca vilambamāno
dhig bhoḥ! kulaṃ ca puruṣasya daridratāṃ ca ..18..

Jester: Her ladyship begs you with her heart; I beg with my head. Take this.
Hero: So be it. (Taking it) My friend! Take this pearl necklace and go to Vasantasenā's presence.
Having obtained desire amidst fortunes, my wish
makes an unfitting affection for women's wealth.
Faltering in honour and in doing duty,
shame, alas! on a man's high birth and on his poverty! (18)
