(4.113) Bābhravya: Aside. Minister, what must be told even after waiting long, let that be told right now.

(4.114) Vasubhūti: In tears. It cannot be told. Even so, this ill-fated man speaks: Lord, that own daughter of the Lord of Siṃhala, named Ratnāvalī, having heard that the long-lived Vāsavadattā was burned, having been asked for earlier, was given to my lord—

(4.115) King: Aside. Queen, why does your maternal uncle's minister speak this untruth?

(4.116) Vāsavadattā: Noble lord, I too do not know who speaks an untruth here.

(4.117) Jester: Then what happened to her?

(4.118) Vasubhūti: And while being brought to your presence, through the wreck of the ship she sank into the ocean. Weeping, he stands with downcast face.

(4.119) Vāsavadattā: In tears. Ah, I am undone, unfortunate that I am! Ah, little sister, where are you? Give me an answer!

(4.120) King: Queen, take heart, take heart! The course of fate is hard to comprehend. Are not these two very men, who fell from a shipwreck and survived, your proof? He points to Vasubhūti and Bābhravya.

(4.121) Vāsavadattā: Noble lord, that is right. But whence should I have such good fortune?

(4.122) King: Aside. Bābhravya, speak! What is this?

(4.123) A clamour behind the scenes.
Lending the splendour of golden peaks to the palaces, as it were, with masses of flames, / its exceedingly fierce heat indicated by the shrivelling of the tops of dense garden trees, / making the pleasure mountain dark with showers of smoke like clouds bearing water, / here a fire, painful with burns to womenfolk, has suddenly arisen in the inner palace! || 77
And moreover:
That rumour of the queen's burning which occurred in Lāvaṇaka formerly— / as if about to make that true, I think this fire has arisen! || 78
