(4.124) King: Rising in agitation. How? Fire in the inner palace! Alas! Queen Vāsavadattā is burned! Ah, beloved Vāsavadattā!

(4.125) Vāsavadattā: Rescue her, rescue her, noble lord!

(4.126) King: How? Out of extreme confusion, the queen, though standing right here, was not noticed! Queen, take heart, take heart!

(4.127) Vāsavadattā: Noble lord, I do not say this on my own account. Here indeed Sāgarikā, bound here by merciless me, is perishing! So let my noble lord rescue her!

(4.128) King: How? Sāgarikā is perishing? Queen, here I go!

(4.129) Vasubhūti: Lord, why act like a moth without any reason?

(4.130) Bābhravya: Lord, Vasubhūti speaks rightly.

(4.131) Jester: Grasping the king by his upper garment. Friend, do not commit such a reckless act!

(4.132) King: Pulling away his upper garment. Curse you, fool! Sāgarikā is perishing; why is breath still kept? Gesticulating being overcome by smoke.
Desist, desist, O fire! Release your trail of smoke! / Why do you display a high circle of flames? / To me, who was not consumed by the fire of separation from my beloved, / what can you do with the brilliance of the fire of cosmic dissolution? || 79

(4.133) Vāsavadattā: How? At the word of me, a bringer of grief, the noble lord has resolved thus! Then I too will follow him.

(4.134) Jester: Walking around, going in front. I too will be the guide of the path.

(4.135) Vasubhūti: How? The King of Vatsa has indeed entered the flames! Then it is fitting for me too, having witnessed the princess's death, to make myself an oblation.

(4.136) Bābhravya: In tears. Ah, great king! Why has the lineage of Bharata been placed on the balance of doubt for no reason at all? Or rather, what is the use of lamentation? I too shall act in a manner worthy of my devotion.
