(4.175) The King | Yaugandharāyaṇa, what was done without informing me?
(4.176) Yaugandharāyaṇa | Let the lord take a seat; I will explain everything.
All sit down.
(4.177) Yaugandharāyaṇa | Lord, listen! This daughter of the ruler of Siṃhala was foretold by a seer: “Whoever takes her hand in marriage shall become a universal monarch.” Then, out of faith in that [prophecy], when she was repeatedly requested by us on our master's behalf, yet the ruler of Siṃhala did not give her, wishing to spare Queen Vāsavadattā distress of mind—
(4.178) The King | What then?
(4.179) Yaugandharāyaṇa | Then, having spread the report at Lāvaṇaka that the queen had perished in fire, Bābhravya was sent to his presence.
(4.180) The King | Yaugandharāyaṇa, the rest has already been heard by me. But with what in mind was she placed in the queen's hands?
(4.181) The Jester | Even untold, this much is surely understood: that being in the inner palace, she would easily come into your sight.
(4.182) The King | Your intention was grasped by Vasantaka.
(4.183) Yaugandharāyaṇa | As the lord says.
(4.184) The King | And I think the incident of the magician was also your doing!
(4.185) Yaugandharāyaṇa | Otherwise, how could she, imprisoned in the inner palace, be seen by the lord? And if unseen, how could she be recognised by Vasubhūti? | Smiling | And now that your sister is recognised, in what is to be done the queen is the authority.
(4.186) Vāsavadattā | Noble lord, why do you not plainly say: “Bestow Ratnāvalī on me”?
(4.187) The Jester | Lady, you have correctly understood the minister's intention.
