Shatakatraya 1.13

1.13

yeṣāṃ na vidyā na tapo na dānaṃ
jñānaṃ na śīlaṃ na guṇo na dharmaḥ |
te martya-loke bhuvi bhāra-bhūtā
manuṣya-rūpeṇa mṛgāś caranti ||

Those who have neither learning nor ascetic austerity, neither generosity
nor knowledge, neither moral conduct nor virtue, nor righteousness—
they, existing as burdens upon the earth in the mortal world,
wander in human form as beasts.
