śrotraṃ śrutenaiva na kuṇḍalena
dānena pāṇir na tu kaṅkaṇena |
vibhāti kāyaḥ karuṇa-parāṇāṃ
paropakārair na tu candanena ||
The ear shines with sacred revelation, not with an earring; / the hand with generosity, not with a bracelet; / the body of those devoted to compassion shines / with acts of benevolence to others, not with sandalwood.
