pāpān nivārayati yojayate hitāya
guhyaṃ nigūhati guṇān prakaṭīkaroti |
āpad-gataṃ ca na jahāti dadāti kāle
san-mitra-lakṣaṇam idaṃ pravadanti santaḥ ||
He keeps [one] from sin, directs [one] toward the good, / conceals what is private, reveals virtues, / does not abandon [one] when fallen into calamity, and gives in time [of need]: / this the virtuous call the characteristic of a true friend.
