1.76

kṣīreṇātmagatodakāya hi guṇā dattā purā te 'khilā
kṣīrottāpam avekṣya tena payasā svātmā kṛśānau hutaḥ |
gantuṃ pāvakam unmanas tad abhavad dṛṣṭvā tu mitrāpadaṃ
yuktaṃ tena jalena śāmyati satāṃ maitrī punas tv īdṛśī ||

All its own qualities were formerly imparted by the milk to the water within it; / seeing the heating of the milk, that water offered itself into the fire; / seeing its friend's distress, the milk grew eager to enter the fire; / reunited with that water, it is pacified: such is the friendship of the virtuous.
