ajānan dāhātmyaṃ patatu śalabhas tīvra-dahane
sa mīno 'py ajñānād baḍiśa-yutam aśnātu piśitam |
vijānanto 'py ete vayam iha viyaj jāla-jaṭilān
na muñcāmaḥ kānām ahaha gahano moha-mahimā ||
Not knowing its burning power, let the moth fall into the blazing fire;
out of ignorance, let the fish swallow the meat caught on the hook;
but we, though knowing full well, do not cast off these sense desires tangled in a web of perils—
alas, how inscrutable is the power of delusion!
