yatrāśritāḥ karmaguṇāḥ kāraṇaṃ samavāyi yat /
taddravyaṃ samavāyī tu niśceṣṭaḥ kāraṇaṃ guṇaḥ //
That in which actions and qualities reside, and which is an inherent cause,
is a substance; whereas a quality is inherent, motionless, and a cause.
