Being incapable of all their duties, considering the fault of their own condition to be caused by living in villages, the great ṛṣis—headed by Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, Atri, Vasiṣṭha, Kaśyapa, Agastya, Pulastya, Vāmadeva, Asita, Gautama, and others—went to their former abode: free from the defects of villages, auspicious, holy, noble, intellect-promoting, unapproachable by the unrighteous, the source of the Gaṅgā, frequented by gods, gandharvas, and kinnaras, full of various gems, of inconceivable and wondrous power, frequented by brahmarṣis, siddhas, and cāraṇas, the source of divine sacred waters and herbs, exceedingly protective, the Himavat guarded by the lord of the immortals.
