upavītaṃ vaṭor ekaṃ dve tathetarayoḥ smṛte | ekam eva yatīnāṃ syād iti śāstrasya nirṇayaḥ
One sacred thread is prescribed for a student, and two for the other two [stages of life]; / there should be only one for ascetics: such is the determination of the scripture.
One sacred thread for the student, two for the other two; for ascetics only one: this is the decision of the treatise.
