tretāgnisaṃgrahaśceti saṃskārāḥ ṣoḍaśa smṛtāḥ
navatāḥ karṇavedhāntā mantravarjaṃ kriyāḥ striyāḥ

and the establishment of the three sacred fires: these are remembered as the sixteen life-cycle rites.
For a woman, these rites up to the ear-piercing rite are nine, performed without mantras.
