dattvaivāpahṛtaṃ dravyaṃ dhanikasyāpy upāyataḥ
prāyaścittaṃ tataḥ kuryāt kalmaṣasyāpanuttaye //

Though a thief may have restored to the owner the stolen property (either openly or) in some indirect manner, he must still perform a penance, in order to purify himself from guilt.
