viṣṇudharmottare “upavāsāsamarthānāṃ kiṃ syādekamupoṣi-
tam . mahāphalaṃ mahādeva! tanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ” .
kṛṣṇa uvāca “yā rāma! śravaṇopretā dvādaśī mahatī tu
sā . tasyāmupoṣitaḥ snātaḥ pūjayitvā janārdanam .
prāptotyayatnāt dharmajña! dvādaśadvādaśīphalam . dadhyodana-
yutaṃ tasyāṃ jalapūrṇaṃ ghaṭaṃ dvije . vastrasaṃveṣṭitaṃ dattvā
chatropānahameva ca . na durgatimavāptoti jātimagryāñca
vindati . akṣayyaṃ syānamāpnoti nātra kāryyā vicā-

In the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa:
'For those unable to fast, what single fast would have great fruit, O Mahādeva? Tell me that as I ask.' / Kṛṣṇa said: 'O Rāma, that twelfth which is joined with Śravaṇa is indeed great. / Having fasted on it, having bathed, and having worshipped Janārdana, / O knower of dharma, one effortlessly obtains the fruit of twelve twelfths. / Having given on it to a brāhmaṇa a pot filled with water along with curd-rice, / wrapped with cloth, and an umbrella and shoes, / he does not meet misfortune and attains an eminent birth. / He obtains an imperishable realm; no doubt should be entertained here.
