A 'cruel person' is one devoid of pity. A 'king' is a ruler of the earth; and by association with him, the royal chaplain as well, as Śaṅkha says: 'One should avoid the food of one who is frightened, censured, weeping, lamenting, publicly called out, hungry, of one whose meal is half-eaten, of one astonished, intoxicated, discarded, and of a king and his chaplain.' A 'washerman' is one who applies dye such as indigo to clothes and the like. An 'ungrateful person' is a destroyer of benefits conferred. One who 'lives by slaughter' subsists by killing living beings. A 'launderer' is one who cleans clothes. One who 'lives by liquor' subsists by selling intoxicating drink. A 'paramour' is an adulterer. One 'whose house contains a paramour' is one who lives with a paramour in the house. An 'informer' is one who proclaims another’s faults. An 'untruthful person' is a liar. An 'oil-presser' (cākrika) is an oil-maker (tailika); or, according to some, a cart-driver, since it is separately mentioned: 'One charged with a sin, an outcaste, an oil-presser (cākrika), an oil-maker (tailika).' 'Bards' are eulogists. A 'seller of soma' is a seller of the soma creeper. The food of these must not be eaten. And all these, beginning with the miser, are twice-born men only, who have become unfit to give food due to faults like stinginess; for there is no applicability [of eating from] others, and a prohibition presupposes applicability.
