The meaning is that an increase in double-handfuls must be made every day until the tenth piṇḍa is completed. Even though the injunction of the scripture is accomplished by adopting either of these two alternatives—the heavy or the light—nevertheless, since undertaking the heavier alternative would not make sense on account of its involving great trouble, it must be inferred that there will be a superior benefit for the deceased; otherwise, the scriptural recording of the heavier alternative would lead to pointlessness. A specific detail was also stated by Vasiṣṭha: 'They should perform the water rite with both hands, the left placed above' (VaDh 4.12). || 3.3
