rasamātrā āpa ito gandhamātrā mahī smṛtā(2) /
ahaṅkārāttāmasāttu taijasānīndriyāṇi ca //

hence the subtle element of taste [and] water; the subtle element of odor [and] earth is handed down.
From the dark ego-sense [arose the elements], and the fiery [produced] the senses;
