vīro 'vaṣṭambhajaḥ saṅkocabhūrvībhatsa iṣyate /
śṛṅgārājjyāyate hāso raudrāttu karuṇo rasaḥ //

the heroic (vīra) is born of resolve; the odious (vībhatsa) is held to arise from revulsion;
from the erotic is born the comic; from the furious comes the pathetic sentiment (karuṇa rasa);
