yaṃ yam artham upādatte duḥkhena sukha-hetave /
taṃ taṃ dhunoti bhagavān pumān chocati yat-kṛte //

2. Whatever he acquires with great labour with a view to enjoying happiness, the supreme Lord makes it slip (from his hands); and for their sake man sorrows;
