eka eva purā vedaḥ praṇavaḥ sarvavāṅmayaḥ /
devo nārāyaṇo nānya eko 'gnirvarṇa eva ca //

48. Formerly there was but one Veda in the form of the sacred syllable encompassing all speech, there was one God Narayana and no other; there was but one Fire and one caste (called Hamsa).
