Sûta said:—Ajamîḍha begot from Nîlinî, Nîla, who was the father of Suśânti, through his severe austerities. Suśânti begot Purujânu, the father of Pṛithu, who begot Bhadrâśva. Now listen to the progeny of Bhadrâśva. He had five sons, namely, Mudgala, Jaya, Bṛihadiśu, Javîhara and Kapila. They all five, it is heard, were the kings in different parts of the Pañchâla and ruled with righteousness. Hence their country was called Pañchâla, or ruled by the five. Thus we have heard.—1-4.
