tatastānabravīddevī pāpo'yaṃ vadhyatāmiti .. 114 ..
well-armoured, bearing weapons, and endowed with great fury. / Then the goddess said to them: “Let this wicked one be killed!”
14.36.115
tataste sahitāḥ sarve mahiṣaṃ samupādravan..
tiṣṭhatiṣṭheti jalpanto muṃcanto'straṇi bhūriśaḥ .. 115 ..
Then all of them together rushed against Mahiṣa, / shouting, “Halt, halt!” and releasing weapons in abundance.
14.36.116
tataḥ samabhavadyuddhaṃ gaṇānāṃ dānavaiḥ saha ..
tataste sacivāḥ sarve vaivasvatagṛhaṃ gatāḥ .. 116 ..

sammukhaḥ pravavau vāto rūkṣaḥ karkarasaṃyutaḥ .. 121 ..
many [of them] along that road by which he had set out, O king: / a harsh wind, filled with gravel, blew straight against his face;
14.36.122
papāta mahatī colkā nihatya ravimaṃḍalam ..
apasavyaṃ mṛgāścakrustasya mārge nṛpottama .. 122 ..
a great meteor fell, striking the disk of the sun; / wild animals kept him on their right as he went on the path, O best of kings;

upaviṣṭāstathā vāṃtā bahumūtraṃ prasusruvuḥ ..
rathadhvaje samāviṣṭo gṛdhraḥ śabdamathākarot .. 123 ..
crouching, they vomited and discharged abundant urine; / a vulture settled upon the flagstaff of his chariot and let out a cry.
14.36.124
sa tānsarvānanādṛtya mahotpātānsudāruṇān ..
prayayau sammukhastasyā devyāḥ kopaparāyaṇaḥ .. 124 ..
Disregarding all those very dreadful, great portents, / dedicated to wrath, he advanced directly toward that goddess,

14.36.127
tato devī samāsādya proktā garveṇa pārthiva ..
na tvayā saṃgaro bhīru nūnaṃ kartuṃ mamocitaḥ .. 127 ..
Then, having approached the goddess, he said with arrogance, O king: / “Truly, timid woman, it is not fitting for you to fight with me.
14.36.128

na karoṣi hi tena tvaṃ mama vākyaṃ kathañcana .. 128 ..
Foolish woman, you do not know my valor, nor my beauty, nor my wealth; / for that reason, you do not heed my word in any way.
14.36.129

evamuktā tato devī kopena mahatā'nvitā .. 131 ..
In the three worlds, foolish woman, there is no man equal to me.” / Thus addressed, the goddess, filled with great anger,
14.36.132
pragṛhya saśaraṃ cāpaṃ vākyametaduvāca ha ..
nālāpo yujyate pāpa kartuṃ saha mama tvayā .. 132 ..
grasped her bow along with an arrow and spoke this speech: / “O wicked one, it is not proper for you to converse with me,

a maiden, while you are filled with lust. Even so, hear my word! / Śakra was not conquered by you on the battlefield through your own valor.
14.36.134
pitāmaha varaṃ devā manyaṃte dānavādhama ..

caturbhiścaturo vāhānanayadyamasādanam ..
sāratheśca śiraḥ kāyācchareṇaikena cākṣipat .. 138 ..
With four she sent the four steeds to the realm of Yama, / and with a single arrow she struck off the charioteer's head from his body.
14.36.139
dhvajaṃ ciccheda caikena tato'nyena hṛdi kṣataḥ ..

14.36.144
viśastro viratho rājansa tadā dānavādhamaḥ ..
tato'smaraccharānbhūpa śastrāṇi vividhāni ca .. 144 ..
Disarmed and chariotless, O king, that lowest of Dānavas / then remembered arrows, O king, and diverse kinds of weapons.
14.36.145
brahmāstraṃ manasi dhyāyaṃstṛṇaṃ tasyai mumoca saḥ ..
muktenāstreṇa tasmiṃstu dhūmavartirvyajāyata .. 145 ..
Meditating in his mind on the Brahmāstra, he discharged a blade of grass at her; / and as that weapon was hurled, a column of smoke arose.
14.36.146
etasminneva kāle tu sa brahmāste divaukasaḥ ..
paraṃ bhayamanuprāptā dṛṣṭvā tasya parākramam .. 146 ..
At that very time, the sky-dwellers along with Brahmā, / seeing his valor, became filled with extreme fear.
14.36.147
tato devī kṣaṇaṃ dhyātvā tadastraṃ pārthivottama ..
brahmāstreṇāhanattūrṇaṃ tato vyarthaṃ vyajāyata .. 147 ..
Then, meditating for a moment, O best of kings, the goddess swiftly struck / that weapon down with a Brahmāstra; thereupon it became useless.
14.36.148
brahmāstre viphale jāte hyāgneyaṃ dānavottamaḥ ..
preṣayāmāsa tāṃ kruddho hyahanadvāruṇena sā.. 148 ..

In this way, the various kinds of weapons released by him / in their thousands were rendered entirely futile by the goddess.
14.36.150
evaṃ niḥśeṣitāstro'sau dānavo balavattaraḥ..
cakāra paramāṃ māyāṃ divyairastraiḥ sureśvarī.. 7.3.36.150..

nistriṃśenāhanatproccaiḥ sa ca prāṇairvyayujyata ..
dānavaḥ pārthivaśreṣṭha pārśve siṃhavidārite .. 155 ..
Struck [him] mightily with her sword, and his life was severed,
O best of kings, as the demon's flank was torn open by the lion.

14.36.163
asmiṃścāhaṃ sadā devāḥ sthāsyāmi varaparvate.. 163..
And on this excellent mountain, O gods, I shall abide forever."
