2.4.9.p24
abhimaṃtrya ca maṃtreṇa tato nīrājayetkramāt .. 11 ..

On the fourteenth lunar day in the dark fortnight, in the month of Āśvina,

prātaḥ snātvā trayodaśyāṃ kṛtvā vai daṃtadhāvanam..

kārya etadvratasyāṃte tathā govarddhanotsavaḥ ..
at the end of this observance, the Govardhana festival is likewise to be performed.
2.4.9.p41
trimuhūrtā'dhikā grāhyā paravedho na doṣabhāk .. 19 ..
An overlap of more than three muhūrtas is to be accepted; an overlapping with the next day incurs no fault. 19.
2.4.9.p42
āśvinasyā'site pakṣe trayodaśyāṃ niśāmukhe ..
In the dark fortnight of Āśvina, on the thirteenth at nightfall,
2.4.9.p43

one should offer the lamp and an oblation to Yama; untimely death is destroyed. 2.4.9.20.
2.4.9.p44
purā hemanakasyaiva bālakaścā'pamṛtyutaḥ ..
Anciently, the young boy of Hemanaka was freed from untimely death
2.4.9.p45
muktobhūdāśvine kṛṣṇatrayodaśyāṃ dayāvaśāt .. 21 .. ..

.. dūtā ūcuḥ .. ..
The messengers said:
2.4.9.p47
yathā na jīvitādbhraśyedīdṛśe tu mahotsave ..
"Tell [us] the means, O Yama, having shown mercy before us,
2.4.9.p48
tathopāyaṃ brūhi yama kṛpāṃ kṛtvā'smadagrataḥ .. 22 ..
so that one may not fall from life during such a great festival!"
2.4.9.p49
.. yama uvāca ..
Yama said:
2.4.9.p50
āśvinasyā'site pakṣe trayodaśyāṃ niśāmukhe ..
"In the dark fortnight of Āśvina, on the thirteenth day, at nightfall,
2.4.9.p51
prativarṣaṃ tu yo dadyādgṛhadvāre sudīpakam .. 23 ..
whoever offers a fine lamp at the door of his house every year,
2.4.9.p52
mantreṇā'nena bho dūtāḥ samāneyaḥ sa notsave ..
with this mantra, O messengers, must not be brought by you during the festival;
2.4.9.p53
prāpte'pamṛtyāvapi ca śāsanaṃ kriyatāṃ mama .. 24 ..
even if premature death has arrived, my command must be obeyed:
2.4.9.p54
mṛtyunā pāśadaṃḍābhyāṃ kālena ca mayā saha ..
'Together with Death, with the noose and the staff, and with Time and me,
2.4.9.p55
trayodaśyāṃ dīpadānātsūryajaḥ prīyatāmiti .. 25 ..
may the son of the Sun be pleased by the offering of a lamp on the thirteenth day!'
2.4.9.p56
mantreṇānena yo dīpaṃ dvāradeśe prayacchati ..
Whoever presents a lamp at the doorway with this mantra
2.4.9.p57
utsave cā'pamṛtyośca bhayaṃ tasya na jāyate .. 26 ..
has no fear during the festival, nor of premature death."
2.4.9.p58
.. vālakhilyā ūcuḥ .. ..
The Vālakhilyas said:
2.4.9.p59
pūrvaviddhacaturdaśyāmāśvinasya sitetare ..
"On the fourteenth day overlapped by the preceding tithi, in the other-than-bright [i.e., dark]
2.4.9.p60
pakṣe pratyūṣasamaye snānaṃ kuryātprayatnataḥ .. 27 ..
fortnight of Āśvina, one should diligently perform a ritual ablution at daybreak.
2.4.9.p61
aruṇodayato'nyatra riktāyāṃ snāti yo naraḥ ..
A person who bathes on this empty day at a time other than dawn,
2.4.9.p62
tasyā'bdikabhavo dharmo naśyatyeva na saṃśayaḥ .. 28 ..
his religious merit accumulated over a year is surely destroyed; there is no doubt.
2.4.9.p63
tathā kṛṣṇacaturdaśyāmāśvine'rkodaye surāḥ ..
Likewise, on the dark fourteenth in Āśvina, at sunrise, O gods,
2.4.9.p64
yāminyāḥ paścime yāme tailābhyaṃgo viśiṣyate .. 29 ..
an oil massage is distinguished in the last watch of the night.
2.4.9.p65
yadā caturdaśī na syāddvidine cedvidhūdaye ..
If the fourteenth day does not occur on two days at moonrise,
2.4.9.p66
dinadvaye bhaveccā'pi tadā pūrvaiva gṛhyate .. 2.4.9.30 ..
or even if it occurs on both days, then the earlier one alone is taken.
2.4.9.p67
balātkārāddhaṭhādvā'pi śiṣṭatvānna karoti cet ..
If out of obstinacy, stubbornness, or even supposed refinement, one does not perform
2.4.9.p68
tailābhyaṃgaṃ caturdaśyāṃ rauravaṃ narakaṃ vrajet ..31..
the oil massage on the fourteenth, he goes to the Raurava hell.
2.4.9.p69
taile lakṣmīrjale gaṃgā dīpāvalyāścaturdaśīm ..
Lakṣmī resides in the oil, and the Gaṅgā in the water on the fourteenth of Dīpāvalī;
2.4.9.p70
prātaḥsnānaṃ hi yaḥ kuryādyamalokaṃ na paśyati .. 32 ..
whoever performs the morning bath indeed does not see the world of Yama.
2.4.9.p71
apāmārgamatho tuṃbīṃ prapunnāḍamathā'param ..
Then apāmārga, and tumbī, and prapunnāḍa as well—
2.4.9.p72
bhrāmayetsnānamadhye tu narakasya kṣayāya vai .. 33 ..
one should wave them during the bath indeed for the destruction of hell,
2.4.9.p73
vāratrayaṃ trivāraṃ ca paṭhitvā mantramuttamam .. 34 ..
three times, having recited the excellent mantra three times:
2.4.9.p74
sītāloṣṭasamāyukta sakaṃṭakadalānvita ..
'O apāmārga, endowed with clods of the furrow, furnished with thorny leaves,
2.4.9.p75
hara pāpamapāmārga bhrāmyamāṇaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ..
remove sin, being waved again and again!'
2.4.9.p76
apāmārgaṃ prapunnāḍaṃ bhrāmayecchirasopari .. 35 ..
One should wave the apāmārga and prapunnāḍa over one's head.
2.4.9.p77
snātvārdravāsasā dadyāddīpakaṃ mṛtyuputrayoḥ ..
Having bathed, with wet clothes, one should offer a lamp to the two sons of Mṛtyu:
2.4.9.p78
śunakau śyāmaśabalau bhrātarau yamasevakau ..
the two dogs, Śyāma and Śabala, brothers and servants of Yama;
2.4.9.p79
tuṣṭau syātāṃ caturdaśyāṃ dīpadānena mṛtyujau .. 36 ..
the two sons of Mṛtyu are satisfied on the fourteenth by the gift of a lamp.
2.4.9.p80
iṣṭavaṃdhujanaiḥ sārddhametatsnānaṃ samācaret ..
One should perform this ritual ablution together with loved ones and relatives;
2.4.9.p81
snānāṃgatarpaṇaṃ kṛtvā yamaṃ saṃtarpayettataḥ.. 37 ..
having performed the water-offering belonging to the bath, one should then make a water-offering to Yama:
2.4.9.p82
yamāya dharmarājāya mṛtyave cā'ntakāya ca ..
'To Yama, to the King of Dharma, to Death, and to the Ender;
2.4.9.p83
vaivasvatāya kālāya sarvabhūtakṣayāya ca .. 38 ..
to the son of Vivasvat, to Time, and to the Destroyer of all beings;
2.4.9.p84
auduṃbarāya dadhnāya nīlāya parameṣṭhine ..
to Audumbara, to Dadhna, to the Dark, to the Supreme Lord;
2.4.9.p85
vṛkodarāya citrāya citraguptāya te namaḥ .. 39 ..
to Vṛkodara, to Citra, to Citragupta—homage to you!'
2.4.9.p86
caturdaśaite mantrāḥ syuḥ pratyekaṃ ca namo'nvitāḥ ..
These should be the fourteen mantras, each accompanied by 'namas';
2.4.9.p87
ekaikena tilairmiśrāndadyāttrīnudakāñjalīn .. 2.4.9.40 ..
with each one, one should offer three palmfuls of water mixed with sesame seeds.
2.4.9.p88
yajñopavītinā kāryaṃ prācīnāvītinā'thavā ..
It may be performed with the sacred thread over the left shoulder or over the right shoulder;
2.4.9.p89
devatvaṃ ca pitṛtvaṃ ca yamasyā'sti dvirūpatā .. 41 ..
for Yama possesses a two-fold nature: both godhead and ancestorhood.
2.4.9.p90
jīvatpitā'pi kurvīta tarpaṇaṃ yamabhīṣmayoḥ ..
Even one whose father is living should perform the water-offering to Yama and Bhīṣma;
2.4.9.p91
narakāya pradātavyo dīpaḥ saṃpūjya devatāḥ .. 42 ..*
atraiva lakṣmīkāmasya vidhiḥ snāne mayocyate ..
having worshipped the deities, a lamp should be offered for Naraka.
Here itself, the rule of bathing for one desirous of prosperity is told by me:
2.4.9.p92
iṣe bhūte ca darśe ca kārtike prathame dine .. 43 ..
On the fourteenth and on the new moon of Iṣa, and on the first day of Kārtika,
2.4.9.p93
yadā snāti tadā'bhyaṃgasnānaṃ kuryādvidhūdaye.
ūrjjaśukladvitīyāyāṃ tithau ca svātiyugmage .. 44 ..
when one bathes, one should take an oil bath at moonrise;
and on the tithi of the bright second of Ūrja, when the moon is in Svātī,
2.4.9.p94
mānavo maṃgalasnāyī naiva lakṣmyā viyujyate ..
a person who takes an auspicious bath is never separated from Lakṣmī.
2.4.9.p95
dīpairnīrājanādatra saiṣā dīpāvaliḥ smṛtā .. 45 ..
Because of the waving of lights with lamps here, this is called Dīpāvali.
2.4.9.p96
iṃdukṣaye'pi saṃkrātau ravau pāte dinakṣaye ..
Even on the new moon, an equinox, a Sunday, during a vyatīpāta, or on a dinakṣaya,
2.4.9.p97
atrā'bhyaṃgo na doṣāya prātaḥ pāpā'panuttaye .. 46 ..
an oil massage in the morning here does not incur fault, for the sake of dispelling sins.
2.4.9.p98
māṣapatrasya śākaṃ vai bhuktvā tasmindine naraḥ ..
Having eaten the greens of māṣa leaves on that day,
2.4.9.p99
pretākhyāyāṃ caturdaśyāṃ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ..47..
on the fourteenth named Preta, a person is liberated from all sins.
2.4.9.p100
iṣāsitacaturdaśyāmindukṣayatithāvapi ..
On the dark fourteenth of Iṣa, and on the tithi of the new moon,
2.4.9.p101
darśādau svātisaṃyukte tadā dīpāvalirbhavet .. 48 ..
at the start of the new moon combined with Svātī, then Dīpāvali should take place.
2.4.9.p102
kuryātsaṃlagnametacca dīpotsavadinatrayam ..
One should observe this continuous three-day festival of lamps.
Thus the great king Bali was addressed by Hari, who was pleased:
2.4.9.p103
mahārājo baliḥ proktastuṣṭena hariṇā tathā .. 49 ..
Thus the great king Bali was addressed by Hari, who was pleased. .. 49 ..
2.4.9.p104
varaṃ yācasva bhadraṃ te yadyanmanasi vartate ..
'Ask a boon, good fortune to you, whatever is in your mind!'
2.4.9.p105
iti viṣṇuvacaḥ śrutvā balirvacanamabravīt .. 2.4.9.50 ..
Having heard this speech of Viṣṇu, Bali spoke [these] words:
2.4.9.p106
ātmārthaṃ kiṃ yācanīyaṃ sarvaṃ dattaṃ mayā tathā ..
'What is to be asked for myself? Everything has already been given by me.'
2.4.9.p107
lokārthaṃ yācayiṣyāmi śaktaśceddehi tacca me .. 51 ..
"I shall ask for the sake of the world; if you are able, grant that to me.
2.4.9.p108
mayā'dya te dharā dattā vāmanacchadmarūpiṇe ..
Today the earth was given by me to you, who assumed the disguise of the Dwarf (Vāmana).
2.4.9.p109
tribhiḥ padaistridivasaiḥ sā cā''krāṃtā yatastvayā .. 52 ..
And since it was traversed by you in three steps during three days,
2.4.9.p110
tasmādbhūmitale rājyamastu ghasratraye hare .. 53 ..
therefore let there be sovereignty on the surface of the earth for three days, O Hari.
2.4.9.p111
madrājye ye dīpadānaṃ bhuvi kurvaṃti mānavāḥ ..
Whatever mortals make gifts of lamps on earth during my reign,
2.4.9.p112
teṣāṃ gṛhe tava strīyaṃ sadā tiṣṭhatu susthirā .. 54 ..
may this wife of yours [Lakṣmī] remain forever firmly established in their house.
2.4.9.p113
mama rājye gṛhe yaiṣāmaṃdhakāraḥ patiṣyati ..
In whosever home darkness shall fall during my reign,
2.4.9.p114
lakṣmīsaṃtānāṃdhakāraḥ sadā patatu tadgṛhe .. 55 ..
let the darkness [of the loss] of Lakṣmī and offspring forever fall upon their home.
2.4.9.p115
caturdaśyāṃ ca ye dīpānnarakāya dadaṃti ca ..
And those who offer lamps on the fourteenth [day] for [the prevention of] Naraka,
2.4.9.p116
teṣāṃ pitṛgaṇāḥ sarve narake na vasaṃti ca .. 56 ..
all their ancestral multitudes shall not dwell in Naraka.
2.4.9.p117
balirājyaṃ samāsādya yairna dīpāvaliḥ kṛtā ..
Those by whom rows of lamps (dīpāvali) are not made when Bali's reign arrives—
2.4.9.p118
teṣāṃ gṛhe kathaṃ dīpāḥ prajvaliṣyaṃti keśava .. 57 ..
how shall lamps blaze in their home, O Keśava?
2.4.9.p119
balirājye tu ye lokāḥ śokā'nutsāhakāriṇaḥ ..
Those people who cause sorrow and lack of joy during Bali's reign,
2.4.9.p120
teṣāṃ gṛhe sadā śokaḥ patediti na saṃśayaḥ .. 58 ..
sorrow shall forever fall upon their home; of this there is no doubt."
2.4.9.p121
caturdaśītraye rājyaṃ balerastviti yācayet ..
One should ask, "Let there be Bali's reign during the three [days beginning with] the fourteenth."
2.4.9.p122
purā vāmanarūpeṇa prārthayitvā dharāmimām ..
Formerly, having begged for this earth in the form of a dwarf,
2.4.9.p123
dadāvatithayeṃdrāya baliṃ pātālavāsinam .. 59 ..
[Hari] gave [it] to Indra the son of Aditi, and [sent] Bali to dwell in Pātāla.
2.4.9.p124
dattaṃ daityapateritthaṃ hariṇā taddinatrayam ..
Thus those three days were granted by Hari to the lord of the Daityas;
2.4.9.p125
tasmānmahotsavaṃ cātra sarvathaiva hi kārayet .. 2.4.9.60 ..
therefore, indeed, one should arrange a great festival at this time by every means.
2.4.9.p126
mahārātriḥ samutpannā caturdaśyāṃ munīśvarāḥ ..
O best of sages, the Great Night (Mahārātri) arose on the fourteenth;
2.4.9.p127
atastadutsavaḥ kāryaḥ śaktipūjāparāyaṇaiḥ .. 61 ..
therefore its festival must be celebrated by those intent on the worship of Śakti.
2.4.9.p128
balirājyaṃ samāsādya yakṣagaṃdharvakinnarāḥ ..
When Bali's reign arrives, Yakṣas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras,
2.4.9.p129
auṣadhyaśca piśācāśca maṃtrāśca maṇayastathā .. 62 ..
herbs, Piśācas, mantras, and jewels—
2.4.9.p130
sarva eva prahṛṣyaṃti nṛtyaṃti ca niśāmukhe ..
all become gladdened and dance at dusk.
2.4.9.p131
tattanmaṃtrāśca siddhyaṃti balirājye na saṃśayaḥ .. 63 ..
And those various mantras attain perfection during Bali's reign; of this there is no doubt.
2.4.9.p132
balirājyaṃ samāsādya yathā lokāḥ suharṣitāḥ ..
Just as people are extremely delighted when Bali's reign arrives,
2.4.9.p133
tathā taddinamadhye tu lokāḥ syurharṣitā bhṛśam .. 64 ..
so during those days people should be exceedingly joyful.
2.4.9.p134
tulāsaṃsthe sahasrāṃśau pradoṣe bhūtadarśayoḥ ..
When the thousand-rayed sun is in Libra, at dusk on the fourteenth and the new moon day,
2.4.9.p135
ulkāhastā narāḥ kuryuḥ pitṝṇāṃ mārgadarśanam .. 65 ..
men should show the way to the ancestors, holding torches in their hands.
2.4.9.p136
narakasthāstu ye pretāste mārgaṃ tu vratātsadā ..
The deceased spirits residing in Naraka,
2.4.9.p137
paśyaṃtyeva na saṃdehaḥ kāryo'tra munipuṃgavaiḥ .. 66 ..
verily see the path by means of this observance; no doubt in this regard should be entertained by the eminent sages.
2.4.9.p138
āśvine māsi bhūtāditithayaḥ kīrtitāstrayaḥ..
In the month of Āśvina, the three lunar days beginning with the fourteenth (bhūta) are proclaimed;
2.4.9.p139
dīpadānādikāryeṣu grāhyā madhyāhnakālikāḥ .. 67 ..
for deeds such as giving lamps, those prevailing at midday are to be accepted.
2.4.9.p140
yadi syuḥ saṃgavādarvāgetāśca tithayastrayaḥ ..
If these three lunar days occur prior to the saṃgava period,
