2.8.10.77
durlabhā sarvajantūnāṃ kathā vistarataḥ kramāt ..
"The full narration in proper order is difficult for all creatures to attain;
2.8.10.78
yātrākramo'pi ca mayā śruta āgacchatāṃ nṛṇām.. 38 ..
and the order of pilgrimage for people who arrive has been heard by me.
2.8.10.79
idānīṃ śrotumicchāmi kṣetrasthānaṃ yathāvidhi ..
Now I desire to hear, according to rule, the place of the sacred field,

2.8.10.84
karomi tvatprasādena tathā kuru yatavrata .. 41 ..
I may perform the pilgrimage by your grace, do so, O you of restrained vows!"
2.8.10.85
.. agastya uvāca .. ..
Agastya said:
2.8.10.86
śṛṇu vakṣyāmi tattvena yātrākramamathāditaḥ ..
"Listen! I shall tell truly the order of pilgrimage from the beginning,
2.8.10.87
ayodhyāṃ saptatīrthānāṃ yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ .. .. 42 ..
of the seven sacred fords in Ayodhyā, properly in succession.
2.8.10.88
manovākkāyaśuddhena nirdoṣeṇāṃtarātmanā ..
Pure in mind, speech, and body, with a faultless inner self,
2.8.10.89
mānaseṣu sutīrtheṣu snātvā kila jiteṃdriyaḥ ..
having bathed in the excellent mental sacred fords, with senses subdued,
2.8.10.90
yaḥ karoti vidhiṃ samyaksa tīrthaphalamaśnute .. .. 43 ..
he who performs the rite properly enjoys the fruit of the sacred ford."
2.8.10.91
.. vyāsa uvāca .. ..
Vyāsa said:
2.8.10.92
mānasānyeva tīrthāni kathayasva tapodhana ..
"Tell me about the mental sacred fords alone, O rich in austerity,
2.8.10.93
yeṣu snātavatāṃ nṝṇāṃ viśuddhirmanaso bhavet .. 44 ..
in which the purification of the mind occurs for men who have bathed."
2.8.10.94
.. .. agastya uvāca .. ..
Agastya said:
2.8.10.95
śṛṇu tīrthāni gadato mānasāni mamānagha ..
"Listen, O sinless one, to the mental sacred fords as I describe them,
2.8.10.96
yeṣu samyaṅnaraḥ snātvā prayāti paramāṃ gatim .. 45 ..
in which a person, having properly bathed, goes to the supreme state:
2.8.10.97
satyatīrthaṃ kṣamātīrthaṃ tīrthamiṃdriyanigrahaḥ ..
Truth is a sacred ford, patience is a sacred ford, restraint of the senses is a sacred ford;
2.8.10.98
sarvabhūtadayātīrthaṃ tīrthānāṃ satyavāditā .. 46 ..
compassion for all beings is a sacred ford, speaking truth is [foremost] of sacred fords;
2.8.10.99
jñānatīrthaṃ tapastīrthaṃ kathitaṃ tīrthasaptakam ..
knowledge is a sacred ford, austerity is a sacred ford—this group of seven sacred fords has been declared.
2.8.10.100
sarvabhūtadayātīrthe viśuddhirmanaso bhavet.. 47 ..
In the sacred ford of compassion for all beings, purification of the mind occurs.
2.8.10.101
na toyapūtadehasya snānamityabhidhīyate ..
Bathing is not called merely having one's body purified with water;
2.8.10.102
sa snāto yasya vai puṃsaḥ suviśuddhaṃ mano matam ..
he is truly bathed whose mind is considered completely pure.
2.8.10.103
bhaumānāmapi tīrthānāṃ puṇyatve kāraṇaṃ śṛṇu .. 48 ..
Listen also to the reason for the sacredness of earthly sacred fords:
2.8.10.104
yathā śarīrasyoddeśāḥ kecinmadhyottamāḥ smṛtāḥ ..
Just as certain parts of the body are traditionally regarded as middling or superior,
2.8.10.105
tathā pṛthivyāmuddeśāḥ kecitpuṇyatamāḥ smṛtāḥ .. 49 ..
so certain regions upon the earth are traditionally regarded as most holy.
2.8.10.106
tasmādbhaumeṣu tīrtheṣu mānaseṣu ca saṃvaset..
Therefore one should reside in both earthly sacred fords and mental ones;
2.8.10.107
ubhayeṣu ca yaḥ snāti sa yāti paramāṃ gatim .. 2.8.10.50 ..
and whoever bathes in both goes to the supreme state.
2.8.10.108
tasmāttvamapi vipreṃdra viśuddhenāṃtarātmanā ..
Therefore you too, O chief of brahmins, with a purified inner self,
2.8.10.109
yātrāṃ kuru prayatnena yātrā vai noditā mayā ..
diligently perform the pilgrimage. The pilgrimage has not yet been told by me;
2.8.10.110
taṃ tu vakṣyāmi vipreṃdra tīrthayātrāvidhiṃ kramāt .. 51 ..
but I will declare that rule of pilgrimage to sacred fords in order, O chief of brahmins.
2.8.10.111
jāyante ca jaleṣveva mriyaṃte ca jalaukasaḥ ..
Water-creatures are born only in the waters and die in them; [yet they do not attain heaven.]
2.8.10.112
na ca gacchaṃti te svargamaśuddhamanaso malāḥ .. 52 ..
nor do they go to heaven, being impure in mind and tainted with dirt. // 52
2.8.10.113
viṣayeṣvaniśaṃ rāgo manaso mala ucyate ..
Constant attachment to sensory objects is called the defilement of the mind;
2.8.10.114
teṣveva hi na saṃgamya nairmalyaṃ samudāhṛtam .. 53 ..
refraining from engaging in them alone is spoken of as purity. // 53
2.8.10.115
cittamantargataṃ duṣṭaṃ tīrthasnānaṃ na śudhyati ..
An inner mind that is corrupt is not purified by ritual ablution at a sacred ford,
2.8.10.116
śataśo'pi jalairdhaute surābhāṇḍamapāvanam .. 54 ..
just as a liquor vessel remains unholy even when washed hundreds of times with water. // 54
2.8.10.117
dānamijyā tapaḥ śaucaṃ tīrthasevā śrutistathā ..
Charity, sacrifice, austerity, purity, resorting to sacred fords, and learning the scriptures—
2.8.10.118
sarvāṇyetāni tīrthāni yadi bhāvena nirmalaḥ .. 55 ..
all these are sacred fords, if one is pure in disposition. // 55
2.8.10.119
nigṛhīteṃdriyagrāmo yatraiva vasate naraḥ ..
Wherever a man dwells who has curbed the senses,
2.8.10.120
tatra tasya kurukṣetraṃ naimiṣaṃ puṣkaraṃ tathā .. 56 ..
there for him is Kurukṣetra, Naimiṣa, and likewise Puṣkara. // 56
2.8.10.121
etatte kathitaṃ vipra mānasaṃ tīrthalakṣaṇam ..
This is declared to you, O brahmin, as the definition of the sacred ford of the mind,
2.8.10.122
snāte yasminkriyāḥ sarvāḥ saphalāḥ syuḥ kriyāvatām .. 57 ..
bathing in which makes all rites fruitful for those who perform them. // 57
2.8.10.123
prātarutthāya matimānsaṃgame snānamācaret ..
Rising at dawn, a wise man should bathe at the confluence;
2.8.10.124
vibhuṃ viṣṇuhariṃ dṛṣṭvā snāyādvai brahmakuṇḍake .. 58 ..
having seen the pervasive lord Viṣṇuhari, he should then bathe in Brahmakuṇḍa. // 58

Having bathed in Cakratīrtha and seen the pervasive Cakrahari,

and then having seen Dharmah вызari, a man is freed from all sins. // 59

ekādaśyāmekādaśyāmiyaṃ yātrā śubhāvahā ..
On each eleventh day [of the fortnight], this pilgrimage brings good fortune.

having performed the daily duty, should also gaze upon Ayodhyā;
2.8.10.130
sarayūṃ tu tato dṛṣṭvā paśyenmattagajaṃ tataḥ .. 61 ..
then having seen the Sarayū, he should next see Mattagaja; // 61

On a Tuesday that is a fourth day, the deities mentioned before [are seen],
2.8.10.136

prātarutthāya matimānbrahmakuṇḍajale plutaḥ ..
Rising at dawn, a wise man bathed in the water of Brahmakuṇḍa,
2.8.10.138
viṣṇuṃ viṣṇuhariṃ dṛṣṭvā manovākkāyaśuddhimān....65..
having seen Viṣṇu as Viṣṇuhari, pure in mind, speech, and body, // 65
2.8.10.139
maṃtreśvaraṃ tato dṛṣṭvā mahāvidyāṃ vilokayet ..
and then having seen Mantreśvara, should behold Mahāvidyā,
2.8.10.140
ayodhyāṃ ca tato dṛṣṭvā sarvakāmārthasiddhaye..66..
and then having gazed upon Ayodhyā, for the attainment of all desires and goals. // 66
2.8.10.141
svargadvāre naraḥ snātvā sacailo vijiteṃdriyaḥ ..
When a man with senses subdued bathes at Svargadvāra with his clothes on,
2.8.10.142
nānāvidhāni pāpāni bahujanmakṛtāni ca ..
the various sins committed across many births

2.8.10.147
tasmāttvamapi vipreṃdraḥ ayodhyāṃ vraja mā ciram ..
Therefore you too, O chief of brahmins, go to Ayodhyā without delay;
2.8.10.148
tatra gatvā krameṇaiva yātrāṃ kuru yateṃdriyaḥ .. 2.8.10.70 ..
having gone there, restrained in senses, perform the pilgrimage in due order. // 70
2.8.10.149
ayodhyā paramaṃ sthānamayodhyā paramaṃ mahat ..
Ayodhyā is the supreme abode; Ayodhyā is supremely great;
2.8.10.150
ayodhyāyāḥ samā kācitpurī naiva pradṛśyate .. 71 ..
no city is seen to be equal to Ayodhyā. // 71
2.8.10.151
ayodhyā paramaṃ sthānaṃ viṣṇucakre pratiṣṭhitam .. 72 ..
Ayodhyā is the supreme abode, established upon Viṣṇu's discus. // 72
2.8.10.152
ityetatkathitaṃ vipra mayā pṛṣṭaṃ hi yattvayā ..
Thus has this been spoken, O brahmin, which was asked by you;
2.8.10.153
samāśraya mune tāṃ tvamanujānīhi māmataḥ .. 73 ..
resort to it, O sage; give me leave now to depart." // 73
2.8.10.154
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
2.8.10.155
ityetaduktvā virate munau kalaśajanmani ..
When the pot-born sage had ceased speaking after saying this,
2.8.10.156
uvāca madhuraṃ vākyaṃ vyāsaḥ sa tapasāṃ nidhiḥ .. 74 ..
Vyāsa, that treasury of austerities, spoke sweet words. // 74
2.8.10.157
.. .. vyāsa uvāca .. ..
Vyāsa said:
2.8.10.158
dhanyo'smyanugṛhīto'smi kṛtakṛtyo'smyahaṃ mune ..
"I am blessed, I am favored, I have achieved my purpose, O sage!
2.8.10.159
satyaṃ śaucaṃ śrutaṃ vipra suśīlaṃ ca kṣamārjavam ..
Truth, purity, scriptural learning, O brahmin, good character, forbearance, and rectitude—
2.8.10.160
sarvaṃ ca niṣphalaṃ tasya ayodhyāṃ nāgato yadi .. 75 ..
all of it is fruitless for him if he has not come to Ayodhyā. // 75
2.8.10.161
yasminmayi prasannena tvayokto dharmanirṇayaḥ ..
Since you, being pleased with me, have declared the determination of dharma,
2.8.10.162
idānīmapi gacchāmi hyayodhyāṃ nirmalāṃ purīm..
even now I will go to the immaculate city of Ayodhyā;
2.8.10.163
tvamapi vraja vipreṃdra svamāśramapadaṃ nijam .. 76 ..
you too, O chief among brahmins, go to your own hermitage." // 76
2.8.10.164
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
2.8.10.165
ityaivamuktvā kramaśo yātrāvidhimanuttamam..
Having thus spoken in order this peerless rule of pilgrimage,
2.8.10.166
jagāma tapasāṃ rāśiragastyaḥ kuṃbhasaṃbhavaḥ .. 77 ..
the pot-born Agastya, a mass of austerities, departed // 77
2.8.10.167
svamāśramapadaṃ dhīro vismayotphullalocanaḥ ..
for his own hermitage, steadfast, his eyes blossoming with wonder;
2.8.10.168
vyāso'pi mahasāṃ rāśirjagāma vijitendriyaḥ .. 78 ..
and Vyāsa too, a mass of splendors, with senses subdued, departed. // 78
2.8.10.169
ayodhyāmāgato vipraḥ sarvakāmārthasiddhaye ..
The brahmin arrived at Ayodhyā for the attainment of all desires and goals;
2.8.10.170
āgatyaitadvidhānena kṛtvā yātrāṃ yathākramam .. 79 ..
having arrived and performed the pilgrimage in due order according to this rule, // 79
2.8.10.171
dṛṣṭvā mahāścaryakaraṃ kāraṇaṃ tīrthamuttamam ..
having seen that supreme sacred ford, the source of great wonder... // 80
2.8.10.172
ānaṃdatuṃdilastatra samyagācamya buddhimān.. 2.8.10.80 ..
Swollen with joy, having properly sipped water there, the wise one,
2.8.10.173
tato jagāma vipreṃdraḥ svamāśramapadaṃ muniḥ ..
then the sage, the eminent brahmin, went to his own hermitage.
2.8.10.174
vyāsena kathitaṃ mahyaṃ māhātmyaṃ kramaśastadā .. 81 ..
The māhātmya was told to me by Vyāsa in due order at that time. // 81
2.8.10.175
mayā śrutvā ca māhātmyaṃ yātrāṃ kṛtvā vidhānataḥ ..
Having heard the māhātmya and having undertaken the pilgrimage according to the rules,
2.8.10.176
kurukṣetre samāgatya bhavadagre nirūpitam .. 82 ..
having arrived at Kurukṣetra, it has been recounted before you. // 82
2.8.10.177
idaṃ māhātmyamatulaṃ yaḥ paṭhetprayato naraḥ ..
Whichever restrained person recites this peerless māhātmya,
2.8.10.178
śraddhayā yaśca śṛṇuyātsa yāti paramāṃ gatim .. 83 ..
and whoever hears it with faith, goes to the supreme state. // 83
2.8.10.179
tasmādetatprayatnena śrotavyaṃ ca janaiḥ sadā ..
Therefore, this should always be heard with effort by people;
2.8.10.180
dvijapūjā viṣṇupūjā vidhātavyā prayatnataḥ .. 84 ..
worship of brahmins and worship of Viṣṇu should be performed diligently. // 84
2.8.10.181
dātavyaṃ ca suvarṇādi yathāśaktyā dvijanmane ..
Gold and other [gifts] should be given to a twice-born according to one's capacity;
2.8.10.182
putrārthī labhate putrāndharmmārthī dharmamāpnuyāt .. 85..
one who desires sons obtains sons; one who desires righteousness attains righteousness. // 85
2.8.10.183
ativipulavidhānairvarṇitaṃ dharmyamādyaṃ kalayati parabhaktyā kṣetramāhātmyametat ..
Whichever best of men in this world receives with supreme devotion this māhātmya of the sacred field, righteous, primordial, and described through very extensive ordinances—
2.8.10.184
ya iha manujavaryaḥ śrīsanāthaḥ sa samyagvrajati harinivāsaṃ sarvabhogāṃśca bhuktvā .. 86 ..
attended by fortune, having enjoyed all pleasures, he goes fully to the abode of Hari. // 86
2.8.10.185
yaḥ pāṭhakasyāpi kadācideva dadāti vittaṃ ca yathātmaśaktyā ..
He who even once gives wealth according to his ability to the reciter—
2.8.10.186
pātrāṇi vastrāṇi manoharāṇi raupyaṃ suvarṇaṃ ca gavīḥ sa mucyet .. 87 ..
vessels, captivating garments, silver, gold, and cows—he is liberated. // 87
2.8.10.187

Thus ends the tenth chapter, titled “Description of the Sequence of the Pilgrimage Procedure to Ayodhyā”, in the dialogue between Agastya and Vyāsa, in the Ayodhyāmāhātmya, in the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, of the Skandapurāṇa comprising eighty-one thousand verses.
2.8.10.188
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇe dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe'yodhyāmāhātmyaṃ sampūrṇam .. ( 2-8)
Thus the Ayodhyāmāhātmya in the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, of the Skandapurāṇa is complete. (2.8)
