24. Now begins the description of the māhātmya of Śivatīrtha. In connection with that, the narrative of Kālabhairava is described: there, when a dispute arose between Brahmā and Viṣṇu concerning their mutual superiority, even though Śiva's superiority was declared by the Praṇava, Brahmā and Viṣṇu disregarded Śiva's superiority due to obstinacy, whereupon Śiva manifested his own luminous form; upon seeing Maheśvara, Brahmā addressed him with words of pride and disrespect; then Maheśvara dispatched against Brahmā the person named Kālabhairava; in the battle of Kālabhairava with Brahmā, Kālabhairava severed Brahmā's fifth head and slew him; then the Lord Maheśvara revived Brahmā; Lord Brahmā offered praise to the Lord Śaṅkara; Śaṅkara granted fearlessness to Brahmā; then, by Śiva's command, in order to cleanse the sin of killing a brahmin, Kālabhairava carried Brahmā's skull in his hand, went on pilgrimage to all the sacred fords for a whole year, and by performing a ritual ablution in Śivatīrtha situated on Mount Gandhamādana by the southern ocean, the sin of killing a brahmin was dispelled; because Kālabhairava deposited the skull right there, that Śivatīrtha is named Kapālatīrtha. [Thus ends] the māhātmya of Śivatīrtha. 43. 1.
