yakṣakardamalepena liptvā puṣpaiḥ prapūjya ca .. 43 ..
having smeared them with yakṣakardama paste and worshiped them with flowers,
4.30.90
āveṣṭya netravastreṇa tataḥ paṭṭāṃbareṇa vai ..
having wrapped them with silk cloth, and then with woven silk,
4.30.91
tataḥ surasavastreṇa tato māṃjiṣṭhavāsasā ..44..
then with fragrant cloth, and then with madder-dyed cloth,
4.30.92
nepālakaṃbalenātha mṛdācā'tha viśuddhayā ..
and then with a Nepalese blanket and pure clay,
4.30.93
tāmrasaṃpuṭake kṛtvā māturaṃgānyaho vaṇik .. 45 ..
and having placed his mother's limbs in a copper casket, O, the merchant,
4.30.94
aspṛṣṭahīnajātiḥ sa śuciṣmānsthaṃḍileśayaḥ ..
untouched by low castes, pure, sleeping on bare ground,
4.30.95
ānayañjvaritopyāsīnmadhye mārgaṃ dhanaṃjayaḥ ..46..
though feverish in the middle of the road, Dhanañjaya brought them along.
4.30.96
bhāravāhaḥ kṛtastena kaściddattvocitāṃ bhṛtim ..
A certain porter was hired by him after paying an appropriate wage;
4.30.97
kiṃ bahūktena ghaṭaja kāśī prāptā'tha tena vai .. 47 ..
what is the use of speaking much, O jar-born [Agastya]? Then he reached Kāśī.
4.30.98
dhṛtvā saṃbhṛtirakṣārthaṃ bhāravāhaṃ dhanaṃjayaḥ ..
Having kept the porter to guard his provisions, Dhanañjaya
4.30.99
jagāmāpaṇamānetuṃ kiṃcidvastvaśanādikam .. 48 ..
went to the market to fetch some items such as food.
4.30.100
bhāravāhyaṃtaraṃ prāpya tasya saṃbhṛtimadhyataḥ ..
Finding an opportunity, the porter took from the middle of the provisions
4.30.101
tāmrasaṃpuṭamādāya dhanaṃ jñātvā gṛhaṃ yayau .. 49 ..
the copper casket, thinking it was wealth, and went home.
4.30.102
vāsasthānamathāgatya tamadṛṣṭvā dhanaṃjayaḥ ..
Then, having returned to the lodgings and not seeing him, Dhanañjaya,
4.30.103
tvarāvānsaṃbhṛtiṃ vīkṣya tāmrasaṃpuṭavarjitām .. 4.1.30.50 ..
hurrying, saw the luggage bereft of the copper casket.
4.30.104
hāhetyātāḍya hṛdayaṃ cakraṃda bahuśo bhṛśam ..
Beating his chest, crying, 'Alas! Alas!', he wept loudly and repeatedly.
4.30.105
itastatastamālokya gatastadanusārataḥ .. 51 ..
Looking around here and there, he went in pursuit of him.
4.30.106
akṛtvā jāhnavīsnānamanavekṣya jagatpatim ..
Without taking a bath in the Jāhnavī, without beholding the Lord of the universe,
4.30.107
tasya saṃvasathaṃ prāpto bhāravoḍhurdhanaṃjayaḥ .. 52 ..
Dhanañjaya reached the dwelling of that load-carrier.
4.30.108
bhāravāḍapyaraṇyānyāṃ tāmrasaṃpuṭamadhyataḥ..
Now, the porter too, in the forest, seeing the bones
4.30.109
dṛṣṭvāsthīni viniḥśvasya tāni tyaktvā gṛhaṃ yayau. ..53..
inside the copper casket, sighed, threw them away, and went home.
4.30.110
vaṇikca tadgṛhaṃ prāpya śuṣkakaṃṭhoṣṭhatālukaḥ ..
And the merchant, having reached his house, his throat, lips, and palate dry,
4.30.111
dṛṣṭvā'tha cailaśakalaṃ tṛṇakuṭyaṃtare tadā ..54..
then saw a piece of cloth within the grass hut.
4.30.112
āśayā kiṃcidāśvasya tatpatnīṃ paripṛṣṭavān ..
Comforted somewhat by hope, he questioned his wife:
4.30.113
satyaṃ brūhi na bhetavyaṃ dāsyāmyanyadapi dhruvam .. 55 ..
'Speak the truth, do not fear; I will surely give you other
4.30.114
vasu kva te gato bhartā māturasthīnime'rpaya ..
wealth. Where has your husband gone? Return my mother's bones to me.
4.30.115
vayaṃ kārpaṭikā bhadre bhavāmo na ca duḥkhadāḥ .. 56 ..
O good lady, we are pilgrims; we do not cause distress.
4.30.116
ajñātvā lobhavaśatastena nīto'sthisaṃpuṭaḥ ..
Not knowing, under the influence of greed, he took the casket of bones.
4.30.117
tasyaiṣa doṣo no bhadre māturme karma tādṛśam ..57..
This is not his fault, O good lady; such was my mother's karma.
4.30.118
athavā na prasū doṣo maṃdabhāgyo'smi tatsutaḥ ..
Or rather, it is not my mother's fault; I, her son, am unfortunate.
4.30.119
sutenakṛtyaṃ yatkṛtyaṃ tatprāptirnāsti bhilli me ..58..
The duty that should be done by a son—there is no achievement of that for me, O Bhilla woman!
4.30.120
udyamaṃ kṛtavānasmi na siddhyenmaṃdabhāgyataḥ ..
I made the effort, [yet] it does not succeed on account of ill fortune.
4.30.121
āyātu satyavākyānme mā bibhetu vanecaraḥ .. .. 59 ..
Let the forest-dweller come upon my true word; let him not fear.
4.30.122
asthīni darśayatvāśu dhanaṃ dāsye'dhikaṃ tataḥ ..
Let him show the bones quickly; I will give him more wealth than that.'
4.30.123
ityuktā tena sā bhillī vyājahāra nijaṃ patim .. 4.1.30.60 ..
Addressed thus by him, that Bhilla woman called her husband.
4.30.124
lajjānamraśirāḥso'tha vṛttāṃtaṃ vinivedya ca ..
Then he, his head bowed with shame, reported the incident and,
4.30.125
nināya tāmaraṇyānīṃ śabarastaṃ dhanaṃjayam ..61..
The hunter led that Dhanañjaya into the dense forest.
4.30.126
vanecaro'tha tatsthānaṃ daivādvismṛtavānmune ..
Then, O sage, the forester forgot that spot by destiny;
4.30.127
digbhrāṃtiṃ samavāpyātha paribabhrāma kānane ..62..
having become disoriented, he then wandered about in the forest.
4.30.128
itoraṇyāttato yāti tatoraṇyādito vrajet ..
He goes from this forest to that, and would wander from that forest to this;
4.30.129
vanādvanāṃtaraṃ bhrāṃtvā khinnaḥ sopi vanecaraḥ .. 63 ..
having roamed from forest to forest, even that forester grew exhausted.
4.30.130
vihāya madhye'raṇyāni taṃ yayau ca svapakkaṇam ..
Leaving him in the middle of the woods, he went off to his own hamlet.
4.30.131
dvitrāṇyahāni saṃbhramya sa kārpaṭikasattamaḥ .. 64 ..
Having wandered about for two or three days, that best of pilgrims,
4.30.132
kṣutkṣāmaḥ śuṣkakaṃṭhoṣṭho hāheti paridevayan ..
emaciated by hunger, his throat and lips dried up, lamenting, 'Alas! Alas!',
4.30.133
punaḥ kāśīpurīṃ prāptaḥ parimlānamukho vaṇik ..8 65 ..
reached the city of Kāśī once more, his face utterly dejected, O merchant.
4.30.134
tanmaṃdabhāgyatāṃ śrutvā lokātkārpaṭiko mune ..
Having heard of that misfortune from the people, O sage, the pilgrim
4.30.135
kṛtvā gayāṃ prayāgaṃ ca tataḥ svaviṣayaṃ yayau .. 66 ..
performed [the rites at] Gayā and Prayāga, and then departed for his own land.
4.30.136
kāśyāṃ praveśaṃ prāpyāpi tadasthīni ghaṭodbhava ..
Even though they had entered Kāśī, O pot-born [Agastya], those bones
4.30.137
vinā vaiśveśvarīmājñāṃ bahiryātāni tatkṣaṇāt .. .. 67 ..
went outside immediately, without the command of Viśveśvara.
4.30.138
evaṃ kāśyāṃ praviśyāpi pāpī dharmānuṣaṃgataḥ ..
Thus, even upon entering Kāśī, a sinner who merely clings to piety [externally]
4.30.139
na kṣetraphalamāpnoti bahirbhavati tatkṣaṇāt .. 68 ..
does not obtain the fruit of the sacred field, [and] is cast out that very moment.
4.30.140
tasmādviśveśvarājñaiva kāśīvāse'tra kāraṇam ..
Therefore, the command of Viśveśvara alone is the cause for dwelling here in Kāśī.
4.30.141
asiśca varaṇā yatra kṣetrarakṣākṛtau kṛte .. 69 ..
Where the Asi and Varaṇā were established to protect the sacred field,
4.30.142
vārāṇasīti vikhyātā tadārabhya mahāmune ..
from that time forth, O great sage, it became known as Vārāṇasī.
4.30.143
aseśca varaṇāyāśca saṃgamaṃ prāpya kāśikā .. 4.1.30.70 ..
Reaching the confluence of the Asi and the Varaṇā, Kāśī is [so named].
4.30.144
vārāṇasīha karuṇāmayadivyamūrtirutsṛjya yatra tu tanuṃ tanubhṛtsukhena ..
Vārāṇasī is here an embodiment of compassion and divine form; having cast off the body here with ease,
4.30.145
viśveśadṛṅmahasi yatsahasā praviśya rūpeṇa tāṃ vitanutāṃ padavīṃ dadhāti .. 71 ..
a embodied being enters at once into the splendor of the sight of Viśveśa, and by that form assumes that state.
4.30.146
jāto mṛto bahuṣu tīrthavareṣu re tvaṃ jaṃto na jātu tava śāṃtirabhūnnimajya ..
'O creature, born and dead in many supreme sacred fords, by plunging into them you never found peace;
4.30.147
vārāṇasī nigadatīha mṛto'mṛtatvaṃ prāpyādhunā mama balātsmaraśāsanaḥ syāḥ .. 72 ..
dead here, you attain immortality and become by my power the Chastiser of Smara [Śiva]'—thus speaks Vārāṇasī.
4.30.148
anyatra tīrtha salile patitodvijanmā devādibhāvamayate na tathā tu kāśyām ..
Elsewhere, a twice-born fallen into the waters of a sacred ford attains the state of a god and the like, but not so in Kāśī;
