By that sound, by signals, and by proclaiming names, / as well as by touch of hands, they then sent one another to the abode of Yama. / Neither god nor Daitya nor Dānava could be recognized there; / being unable to distinguish, they made this arrangement there: / The Daityas uttered 'Āṭi', and the gods uttered 'Baka'; / those who said 'Baka', the Daityas slew them then; / and the gods [slew] whoever said 'Āṭi'—thus it went on. / Such was the battle that lasted for a thousand years, / causing great fear indeed among the Daityas with the gods in the darkness. / Then, in that darkness, an exceedingly terrifying, extremely dreadful battle took place, / destructive to the world, shedding torrents of blood between the gods and the Asuras who wished for the welfare of the world.
