With conchs, bherīs, mṛdaṅgas, and murajas and flutes / being sounded, King Hiraṇyākṣa marched forth from the city of Aśmaka. / In front, behind, and on both flanks, / all the Asuras marched, O Vyāsa, like planets around the sun. / And going forth from the city, O Vyāsa, the lord of Daityas saw birds / portending danger, but he did not take them to heart. / A black-bodied serpent crossed his path, / and a vulture with a red mouth perched upon the tip of his flagstaff.
