Sanatkumāra said:
Setting forth with speed, the mail-clad Daityas and Dānavas
marched against the Boar like distressed deer against a lion. (1)
Those lords of Asuras, being drawn on by the gaze of the Boar,
appeared, O Vyāsa, ready in armor like sacrificial animals that have been consecrated. (2)
Having bound them with cords of death by the dispenser of doom,
he led those Daityas along at that time as a man leads animals. (3)
Having traversed eight yojanas, they all beheld the Boar
who had emerged from the ocean's waters, like small beasts [beholding] a lion. (4)
Having looked at him for a moment, the infuriated Daityas and Dānavas
surrounded him on every side, stretching their bows. (5)
Then, seeing them attacking from all directions,
the lordly Boar of exceedingly great strength said this to the Daityas: (6)

"Who are you in the form of a boar here, having crossed the swelling sea?
Why have you come here, or where are you to go?" (9)
Hearing their words, that high-minded Boar,
resembling the rumble of a raincloud, then said to all the Dānavas: (10)
"I am a boar, O Daityas, as you can see by such a form.
I have come to this region for roaming about, without a doubt. (11)
My wife has been abducted by another; despondent, O foremost of Daityas,
I am wandering about, contemplating the recovery of that villain's spoils." (12)
The Dānavas said:
"This is not a wandering ground for you; this is the realm of the Daityas.
Disregarding the Daityas, how have you come into this land? (13)
We shall kill you today, all of us, lowest of the race of beasts!
And having slain you, we will indeed take you before the lord of the Daityas." (14)
Then all those Dānavas struck him violently with excellent weapons,
just as haughty clouds [strike] a mountain with rain. (15)
That strong, divine-souled Boar of exceedingly great might,
even while being struck, addressed these words to those Daityas: (16)
"Indeed, O best of Asuras, I have not committed even the slightest
offense against you here, nor will I do so, nor do I now. (17)"

Then, seeing them all slain by the Boar,
one [servant], having escaped with great difficulty, entered the city of Aśmaka. // 1
Going to the door of his assembly hall, he spoke these words,
with dishevelled hair, covered in dust, and drenched in blood: // 2
"Inform the wise lord of the Dānavas, O Daityas!"
Urged on, the doorkeeper, weapon raised, reported to the king: // 3
"Those best of asuras who went to see that lord of beasts—
all those sons of Diti have been struck down by him, attacking with valour. // 4
Do not be negligent, O king of the Daityas! Do not underestimate the lord of beasts!
Do not wait for a later time, and do not think him to be [a mere] beast.
He is vast, without a doubt; he cannot be conquered by the Dānavas." // 5

iti skandapurāṇe asurasandeśanaṃ nāma dvyuttaraśatatamodhyāyaḥ
Having slain all those servants, he came to the city of the Aśmakas, / roaring like a cloud pouring down rain at the end of an era.
Having gone to that city, O Vyāsa, the almighty lord, consisting of all worlds, / turning from left to right, arrived at the southern gate.
There, by the many Danavas guarding the southern gate, / an exceedingly loud clamour was raised, by which the city was agitated.
For, having shattered the *śataghnī*s, the door panels, and the heavy clubs, / that imperishable one ground to powder the wheels of destruction and the siege engines.
Then, filled with intense rage, those Danava great car-warriors arrived, / covering the lord of beasts with a fierce shower of weapons.
Then, struck by them with javelins, discuses, and *bhindipāla* slings, / he abandoned the gate, came forth, and took his stand on level ground.
Thinking then, 'He is defeated indeed!', those Asuras, O Vyāsa, / pursued him from behind, hacking at him with their choice weapons.
Being hacked by the downpour of arrows, javelins, massive clubs, and iron-tipped pestles, / having come out then, he, abode of the hosts of the gods, fought the sons of Diti.
Thus ends the one hundred and second chapter, entitled 'The Encounter with the Asuras', in the Skandapurāṇa.

'Have you no shame, O lords of Danavas, in coming to battle? / Or perhaps you have no strength, and it was falsely that you conquered the gods!
You are many and strong, while I am a beast of the forest; / I do not think, O best of Danavas, that your mind is set on righteous combat.
I have no bow whatsoever, nor any weapon of that kind, / by which I might fight against many armed ones, O lords of Asuras.
If you agree, cast down your weapons now, / and fight with me one by one, adhering to the rules of fair combat.'
Sanatkumāra said: / Hearing that speech of his, Andhaka, the lord of the Danavas, / spoke to all the Daitya leaders, roaring like a cloud at the end of an era:
'It is just as this beast has said, O great Daitya car-warriors! / Let us cast away our weapons today, and fight one by one!'
Prahlāda said: / 'This is folly, O lords of Daityas, just as this vile beast has spoken! / A battle is praised when it is between equals with equals.
Beasts possess neither weapons nor the strength of arms; / yet they are ever slain with weapons: this is considered the law by the righteous.
How can we, O lords of Danavas, abandon our own duty, / adopt the ways of beasts, and fight like animals?
This vile, wicked beast is not unfit to be killed by us and our kind. / […] Let there be no hesitation whatsoever on your part regarding this beast!
Employing sorcery, this wicked-souled defiler of the gods, / full of evil intent, wishes to deceive us, O Daityas!

This is Viṣṇu of wicked conduct, evil-souled, a thorn to the Daityas, / who, incapable through his own valour, stands here resorting to illusion.'
Sanatkumāra said: / Then that powerful lord of Asuras, enraged, O Vyāsa, covered him / with many arrows from his bow and shouted fiercely.
Andhaka, Vipracitti, and all those Daityas and Danavas / showered him with sharp arrows by the hundreds and thousands.
Then the divine one, pierced exceedingly by those deeply enraged Danavas, / shone like Mount Himālaya covered with the rays of the sun.
Gathering powerful speed, shaking off the sharp arrows, / the lord playfully advanced against the Danava Prahlāda.
Having rushed to his chariot, he forthwith reduced the charioteer and the chariot / to mere names by means of his tusks and forelegs.
Then, springing down from the chariot though struck by the Danavas, / the god struck that Daitya on the head with the chariot's banner-pole.
Prahlāda, too, leaping up then with a club of dreadful appearance, / struck the enraged one on the chest, like an obstacle standing in the way of righteousness.
Struck by him, the god abandoned his chariot then, / and returned to that very place where he had stood previously.
Then Andhaka, Vipracitti, Śambara, and Kālaśambara / pierced Nandivardhana with arrows resembling venomous serpents.

iti skandapurāṇe vipracittipātane caturuttaraśatatamodhyāyaḥ
For one who can slay an elephant in battle, and a lion, and a śarabha, / what reckoning would there be, O mighty Daitya, regarding this beast? / And out of fear of me, that boar, accompanied by all the gods, / challenges me, O lord of Daityas; therefore, victory is certainly mine. / Indeed, you yourself, O Daitya, [shall go] as my messenger to him […]; / go in haste to the mortal realm, O bull among Dānavas. / By truth I swear, O Dānava: I shall not return without having slain / the killer of my brother, who strikes terror into the Dānavas.
Sanatkumāra said:
Then, having given orders to his charioteer, he had his chariot made ready. / To console his wives, he entered his apartments again. / Performed auspicious rites by them there at that time, and having looked upon those sons of Diti all around, / the mighty one took up all the radiant gear suitable for battle, capable of warding off enemies. / Thus ends the one hundred and fourth chapter in the Skandapurāṇa, in the Fall of Vipracitti.
