'O brahmins, O men, listen to my words that I speak to you;
you are clearly devoid of sense; hear my counsel!
He has died indeed through time; why do you grieve like fools?
He will not live because of crying; attend to your own welfare, free from distress.'
Sanatkumāra said:
Having heard his words, they then abandoned the son and began to leave,
looking back again and again. Then a jackal said to them:
'Oh, shame! All you men, look, you who are devoid of wisdom!
Unloving and ungrateful, how can you leave him and go?
With difficulty is a son obtained, and so too is he born;
and with difficulty, O cruel ones, does he grow up, afflicted by illness!
Have you forgotten indeed all those exceedingly many charming words
which this boy spoke? Oh, the lovelessness in you!'
Sanatkumāra said:
Then, having heard the jackal's words, O Vyāsa, they returned,
and surrounding [the body] and weeping, they remained then in the cemetery.
