tamāpatantaṃ vṛkṣeṇa śaṃkukarṇo gaṇeśvaraḥ .
śālena26 tāḍayāmāsa ita ehīti cābravīt ..2 3 ..
kruddhena śaṃkukarṇena vṛtro vai śālatāḍitaḥ .
upetya pāde jagrāha śaṃkukurṇaṃ balī balāt . . 24. .
śaṃkukarṇaṃ gṛhītvā tu vṛtro nāga ivāṇḍajam27 .
bhrāmayāmāsa vivaśaṃ lokaṃ moha ivodyataḥ .. 25. .
śaṃkukarṇasya vṛtreṇa bhrāmyamāṇasya sarvaśaḥ .
śarīrātsamadīryanta bhūṣaṇāni sahasraśaḥ . . 26 . .
taṃ bhrāmyamāṇaṃ prasamīkṣya devā vṛtreṇa sarve ca tadā gaṇeśāḥ .
hāheti kṛtvā dhṛtaśastrabāṇāḥ pradudruvustasya vimokṣaṇārtham ..27..
āgacchātastān prasamīkṣya vṛtraḥ sarvān gaṇeśān śitaśastrahastān28 .
mumoca taṃ saṃsadi29śaṃkukarṇaṃ nāgaṃ garutmāniva pakṣirājaḥ ..28..

As he rushed forward, Śaṃkukarṇa, the lord of the gaṇas, struck him with a tree, / with a śāla tree, and said, "Come here! Come here!"
Struck with the śāla tree by the enraged Śaṃkukarṇa, / the mighty Vṛtra approached and forcibly seized Śaṃkukarṇa by the foot.
Having seized Śaṃkukarṇa, Vṛtra whirled him around, helpless, / as a serpent might a bird, or as delusion, rising up, [whirls around] the world.
As Śaṃkukarṇa was whirled round on every side by Vṛtra, / thousands of ornaments fell shattered from his body.
Seeing him being whirled about by Vṛtra, all the gods / and lords of the gaṇas, crying "Alas, alas!" and bearing weapons and arrows, rushed forward to release him.
Seeing all those lords of the gaṇas approaching with sharp weapons in their hands, / Vṛtra released Śaṃkukarṇa in the assembly, as Garuḍa, king of birds, releases a serpent.
