with jabs from the tips of their claws and seizing each other by the throat, / with lion-roars, accompanied by instruments, with trees, rocks, and boulders, / Śaṅkukarṇa the leader of the gaṇas and Vṛtra the son of Danu / struck each other, seeking an opening against one another. / But Vṛtra, like a deep-rooted tree, / seized by Śaṅkukarṇa's hands, was suddenly thrown down onto the ground. / Then, in the army of the lords of gaṇas and likewise in the army of the Dānavas, / loud cries of "Well done!" arose when Vṛtra was struck down. / Having struck Vṛtra with his fist and hurled him to the earth, / Śaṅkukarṇa stepped back quickly, like the soul from the body. / But Vṛtra, endowed with immense valor, though agitated by the punch, / rose up like Indra's banner and charged at the lord of the gaṇas.
