atha sa vrajamānastu vyāghreṇābhīṣito dvijaḥ .
viveśa taṃ tadā deśaṃ sā gartā14 yatra bhūdhara . .8 . .
garttāyā 15 vīraṇastambe lambamānāṃstadā munīn .
apaśyadārto 16 duḥkhārttānapṛcchattāṃśca sa dvijaḥ17 . . 9 . .

Then, as he was walking, the twice-born, terrified by a tiger, / entered that place where that pit was, O mountain. / In the pit, he then saw sages hanging from a clump of vīraṇa grass; / afflicted, he saw them afflicted with sorrow, and that twice-born questioned them:
