[Variant readings]
499
seizing like crocodiles, tearing like makaras, / raining down like clouds, and roaring like lions, / all resisted the army of the Dānavas with sheer momentum. // 32
Struck by the onrush of the gods, that striving army of the Danus and Dānavas / became supportless, overwhelmed, like grass caught in the mouth of fire. // 33
Thus ends the eighty-eighth chapter in the battle of the Skandapurāṇa.
Sanatkumāra said:
For the sake of protecting those who were driven back by that assault, broken, and again tormented, / Hiraṇyākṣa of exceedingly blazing eyes stepped forth. // 1
And Andhaka, possessor of great illusion, and his brothers equal to him, / a hundred thousand chariots belonging to all those who never fled, // 2
and Prahlāda with his brothers, the son of Hiraṇyakaśipu, / Vipracitti with his brothers, and together with the Saiṃhikeyas— // 3
